VARIETY review (from the 22-Sept-1965 Variety Weekly):
"Blackpool Night Out"
Top-lining this segment of ABC TV's peak-hour vaude show, which has gustily
clicked in the normal Palladium slot and given that resting show food for
thought, was Buddy Greco, who came up with a swinging song-a-log, given perhaps
with too much nonchalance. Greco's grasp of ditties like "Falling in Love with
Love" and his familiar "Lady Is a Tramp" was self-evident, but a ballad like
"Who Can I Turn To?" seemed to need more personal involvement to get its message
across. Greco broke up the songs with his piano account of "Slaughter on 10th
Avenue," which somewhat overstayed its welcome, though it allowed some nifty
fingerwork. Some impact was lost here because the ABC Television Showband, under
Bob Sharpies, wasn't taut and precise enough for this glossy score.
Janie Marden, a local thrush who's a looker and a reliable warbler, gave out a
frenzied "Ridin' High," which had more momentum than shape, but recovered with a
persuasive "If I Ruled the World." The girl has a lusty set of pipes and always
gives a good account of herself, but she hasn't been able to find that
individual vein to distinguish her from the crop of able femme singers.
Bob Monkhouse came up with two items that bisected his act, but pleased in a
cabaret style. In somewhat dubious taste for a Sunday evening, he donned wings
as an angel giving a gladhand welcome to new arrivals in heaven. And he
impersonated the brain control-room of a guy who was over-eating, over-drinking,
over-smoking, and getting excited by an adjacent dame — sending warning messages
by phone to affected parts of the anatomy. The ideas were original, and
Monkhouse pulled them off with aplomb.
Hosts Mike & Bernie Winters gagged in a broader idiom, and Pat Johns directed
with a sure touch.
