VARIETY review (from the 15Oct1958 issue of Weekly Variety):
Foreign TV Reviews, page 52.
Sunday Night at the Palladium
"Sunday Night at the Palladium" has become so habit forming that viewers are likely to accept it without much demur. But the show caught (5) again provided convincing proof that there is difficulty in finding enough star acts to make the show a topper. Brian Tester's direction and staging were slick enough but there was a general atmosphere of "this-has-all-been-seen-before" about the show.
Heading the bill were The Platters, an amiable singing group on disks, but far from exciting visually. They sang "Twilight Time," "My Serenade" and "Don't Let Go" in a manner so relaxed as to make no real impact. Heftier singing came from Luigi Infantino with a couple of songs, "This is the Place of The Sun Shining" and "Milano," his own composition. Robust, but again not highly visual.
Best item was the immaculate venting of Senor Wences, a popular act with U.K. audiences. His routine came up as fresh as crisp salad, with witty patter and perfect technique.
The Three Monarchs weighed In with their now overfamiliar comedy harmonica act and Rudy Cardenas, a Mexican juggler, did his stint very well but, frankly, offered nothing that did not appear to have been seen on similar bills a hundred times.
Bruce Forsyth emceed with eagerness and obvious desire to please. Apart from a few gags he did a fair skit on a girl crooner and handled "Beat the Clock" as well as this rock-bottom feature can possibly be done. The jackpot stood at $1,120 and the contestants never remotely looked like winning the loot.
Dance routines and orchestral backing were fully up to scratch, as usual.

[--] VARIETY review (25Feb1959 issue of Weekly Variety):
Foreign TV Followup, page 26
"Sunday At London Palladium" Sparked a little in the production department by such simple devices as a new placing for one camera, a swift re-siting of another during a commercial break and some extensive use of mixes, this edition of the Sunday (15) night Associated Television show came up as a sound contribution to the gaiety of family viewing.
David Whitfield topped the bill, loud in lung with virile renderings of "My Heart And I," "March Of The Grenadiers" and other well-chosen opuses that negatived his over-intense and unbending manner.
Couple of U. S. performers gave solid support: Joan Diener, voluptuously giving out with numbers front "Kismet" for the most part, and Charles Manna. Latter, who had scored a hit the preceding Sunday (8), didn't wow 'em as much as before but was still funny in his inconsequential way, scoring in particular with his impressions of how certain famous vocalists got their first breaks.
Les Marcellis showed fine control and timing with their comedy acrobatics, and the London Palladium Boys and Girls and the Cyril Ornadel orchestra gave polished support. Agreeable surprise of the whole program was the relative excitement of the "Beat The Clock" spot, due largely to the near-capturing of the $3,920 jackpot by a sergeant from the Coldstream Guards and his spouse.
Bruce Forsyth did the linking stuff with his customary "aplomb, perpetuating those "I'm in charge" and drip-dry-shirt gags that have come to be part of the pattern.
Producer Stephen Wade, deputizing for a sick Albert Locke, handled the proceedings with something akin to enthusiasm.

[--] VARIETY review (18Mar1959 issue of Weekly Variety):
"Sunday Night at London Palladium"
With utter assurance, Connie Francis took the limelight in the March 8 edition of Associated Television's show and probably gained fans in the process. Her confident singing of tunes such as "Rock-a-bye Baby," "My Happiness" and "Got the Whole World In His Hands" contrasted well with her apparent shyness in interim moments.
Program as a whole once again emphasized the family-appeal trend, not so much in its assortment of acts as in Bruce Forsyth's emceeing. He's playing It well.
On this occasion he trod the Mother's Day pedal, crowed delightedly over fan mail, inserted his "I'm in charge" gag—and so on, to the live audience's warm approval.
Tosca de Lac, aerialist, went through some stately and tricky convolutions, Billy Dainty did some energetic but not too hilarious gagging and the Marino Marini Quartet played in the manner that their "Volare" disk made famous. The "Beat The Clock" spot had to be tolerated, of course, but this time there wasn't even the kick of having a single competitor win a single prize.
Teamwork of the Tiller Girls was tops, and Cyril Ornadel and the London Palladium Orchestra gave sterling support throughout. Production was well up to standard.

[--] VARIETY review (25Mar1959 issue of Weekly Variety magazine):
"Sunday Night at the London Palladium"
If Johnnie Ray's lost some of the magic, it didn't show through in this Associated Television Sunday (15) program—slightly retitled. incidentally, into "Val Parnell's Sunday Night From the Stage of the London Palladium." His showmanship was still tops, and possibly his camera technique had improved somewhat as he put over "Who's Sorry Now?" "All in the Game" and "Somebody Stole My Gal." As a visitor, though, he oughtn't to have come out with the line: "Welcome to the Palladium."
The show in general had verve and pace. Ravic and Babs put on some polished roller-skating, aided by a simple but effective-lighting device. Morecambe and Wise, back from Australia and the States, came up with some inferior patter and amusing incidentals, though they
were a shade blue for the family audience. Arlene Fontana, disk-cutter for the Paris label in America, made considerable impact with just two numbers. And emcee Bruce Forsyth proved more than ever his aptness for the job, even making cordial capital out of three fluffs. With Robert Beatty, cast-topper of the "Dial 999" vidpix skein, he put on a double act that made amusing and topical capital out of recent General Post Office developments.
With contestants failing to scoop in the $5,400 jackpot from the "Beat the Clock" feature, the cash goes to charity and the whole spot is rested till April 12. Who's complaining?
Usual dancers and orchestra were, as always, competent. So was everything in the production department.

[--] VARIETY review (29Apr1959 issue of Weekly Variety magazine):
"Sunday Night at London Palladium"
John Raitt's first television appearance in the U.K. gave a fine singing flourish to the top spot of "Sunday Night at the London Palladium" (19). This good looking, virile singer started with "The Road To Anywhere," followed with the hit number from "The Pajama Game," "Hey There!," gave the audience a beat with "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednigo," and rounded off a smooth, jaunty offering with a couple of memories of "Oklahoma!". Raitt's warm, likable personality made him one of the biggest Yank successes there has been on this program.
Vic Oliver, also making his first appearance in this show, offered his usual routine of deprecating humor and a spot of fiddle playing at the end. This veteran comedian has been putting over a similar act for many years now and on this showing was only spasmodically funny. Frankie Vaughan made a surprise guest appearance to plug his new disk. He joined the Kaye Sisters act for "Come Softly," the blond's chirpers having previously given out adequately with "Kiss Me, Honey" and "May You Always."
It's a brisk trio but latterly it has tended to get into a rut with choice of ditties. Charly Wood, a talented and amusing unicyclist and juggler, opened the bill immediately after the Tiller Girls had done one of their expert drilled routines.
The bill was, as usual, emceed by the popular, now very confident but still over-gushing Bruce Forsyth who also handled "Beat The Clock" for which the jackpot stands at $840. Albert Locke gave some shrewd direction to a bill which was noteworthy also for Raitt's melodious finale.

"Sunday Night at London Palladium"
Cool and assured, and very much the pro, Jo Stafford did a businesslike stint of topping this Associated Television program aired Sunday (7); her technique was tops, but there wasn't great evidence of feeling as she put over four numbers in varying tempi. A packed London Palladium, from which the show was beamed, yielded applause that showed she'd scored solidly—as she doubtless did in the homes, too, aided by presentation that included image super-imposition.
Hit of the rest of the bill was pianist-composer Russ Conway who jangled the ivories to produce his hit parade tunes "Side Saddle" and "Roulette" and who exerted the charm—he has plenty—effectively.
Zany comedian Peter Sellers, abetted by Irene Handl and Harold Berens, enacted an item about an Eurasian drugstore attendant that came in the category of one man's tonic, another man's emetic, while Eliane & Rodolph put across an adagio act with showmanship.
The "Beat The Clock" section, Jackpot remaining unwon at $1,400, proved more diverting than usual, while Bryce Forsyth made his customary common-man bid effectively during the overall interlinking.
The London Palladium Boys & Girls and Cyril Ornadel's orch backed with precision. Production was polished.
