For Johnny Carson, the comedy highspot of his late-eneving television career
came the night Michael Rennie told Johnny he was lovely.
It happened during "The Tonight Show's" cover of the New York premiere of
"Cleopatra", which Johnny thinks was, in its entirety, the
funniest show of the season.
"Everything went so wrong that night that it turned out to be a spoof of a
glittering premiere.
Guests didn't arrive when they should, no one listened to what anyone else said
or answered.
Our first guest, Roddy McDowall, was seen walking into camera range backwards.
Bert Parks,
who was handling the interviews in the lobby, said, "And now back to you,
Johnny" and I said,
"I don't want it, Bert. Back to you."
Then when I was talking to Michael Rennie, he could see me on a monitor in the
theater lobby,
I asked him for the identity of the lady with him. 'She's my fiancee," he said.
'She's lovely', I said,
"Thank you, so are you", he said.
"He didn't mean to say that. He didn't even know what he had said, but it was
typical of the way
things went."
