Mike Douglas Show, The {Edie Adams, Rodney Dangerfield, Ferrante & Teicher, Rex Reed, Richie Havens} (TV) (1969)
One in this series of talk shows hosted by Mike Douglas. Douglas and special co-host Edie Adams welcome
comedian Rodney Dangerfield, musician Richie Havens, author and film critic Rex Reed, and pianist duo Ferrante & Teicher.
—At the show's opening, Douglas sings "A Cockeyed Optimist" from "South Pacific"
—Edie Adams performs a series of impressions – of Zsa Zsa Gabor, Phyllis Diller and Lady Bird Johnson –
before singing "I'm A Woman," made famous by Peggy Lee.
—Rodney Dangerfield takes the stage and performs a stand-up routine about his views on beauty standards and romance;
how he "gets no respect" from his wife and others; his bad NYC neighborhood and his son's questionable school;
and his feelings on giving to foreign charities.
Dangerfield then sits down with Douglas and Adams and talks about his appreciation of Philadelphia,
apart from one hotheaded cab driver, and his past job at an amusement park.
—Richie Havens performs "High Flyin' Bird" and then discusses his career and collaborations with songwriter Paul Williams;
his upbringing in Brooklyn and inspiration from country music; his interest in performing songs with honest messages rather
than strict morals; and his views on life, diversity and personal growth.
Havens then performs Bob Dylan's "Just Like A Woman."

—Rex Reed:
After this, Reed takes the stage and comments on his recent trip to Cuba and time spent on the West Coast; his attempts to
write a screenplay for Greek actress Melina Mercouri; his own history as an actor; his celebrity-gossip book
"Do You Sleep in the Nude?" (1968) and transition to film criticism; his dislike of Barbra Streisand and of
Shirley MacLaine's new film "Sweet Charity" (1969); his famously harsh reviews and sense that many actors now
wish to be criticized by him for the publicity; his experiences at various Hollywood soirées, including a bash at
Jennifer Jones' house at which he encountered Rita Hayworth and a hostile Richard Harris; whether film critics
truly "have too much power," as stated by Harris and others; his list of under-appreciated films of 1968; celebrities
with "personalities" in place of talent; his dislike of "anti-stars" Dustin Hoffman and Mia Farrow's new film
"John and Mary" (1969); and his disapproval of excessive sexual content and nudity in films, particularly
when it features unattractive participants.
—pianist duo Ferrante & Teicher:
Ferrante & Teicher then perform two musical pieces, briefly telling Douglas about their synchronicity,
their "ambitious mothers" and their training at the Julliard School of Music.
—Rex Reed closes the program by decrying Farrow's 1968 film "Secret Ceremony," adding that she
resembles ex-husband Frank Sinatra "in drag."
Commercials deleted.
