News item: [San Mateo Times]
For Fan's of the Big Bands, Monday and Tuesday night watching the Merv Griffin
show must have
brought back some memories and a few tears. Merv played host to some of the
people who made
the Big Band era. Unfortunately most of the big names have gone. Many are no
longer involved in
music at all, and many are dead. A lot of the music which was 'so familiar to
those who lived
through and loved the "Big Band Era" could be reproduced from the old
arrangements even if
the leaders or original band are not around. Anyway, someday somebody will come
along with a
Big Band type sihow on television that will click and join Lawrence Welk as top
musical television.
Merv's first efforts sounded and looked very good.

This is the thinking that lies behind much of tlie programming on "The Merv
Griffin Show,"
seen on CBS. "We've had some really remarkable nights in the last several
months." Griffin notes.
He brought quickly to mind the "lawyer's night" a few months ago in which a
panel of some of the
most noted attorneys in the nation spent an hour and a half talking about their
most celebrated cases.
Then there was that recent evening devoted to so-called "self-made men."
"Everyone on the
stage that night was a millionaire," Griffin says, "and every one of them had
made it with not
much more than an idea and long, hard hours of work." One of Griffin's favorite
shows, he says,
was one he didn't host — the one taken over by actor and ecology expert Eddie
Albert.
"The guests were all experts, and they spent the evening telling us what we had
to do to clean up
the country," Griffin recalls. Griffin says, "After shows like this, we become
more determined
than ever to carry on with our thematic programming.
