fearing other underworld characters, goes to the assistant district attorney to see a picture, and Teddy Merrill is there.
The picture leads up to the crime. Charlie admits to shooting the jeweler, and Merrill proves he was only a lookout.

at his job as a scribe Bailey became convinced that a man thought to have been accidentally drowned, actually had been murdered.
