Show makes its first New York origination with "Night of the Iguana" stars Liz
Taylor and Richard Burton.
24Sep1964 (ATV-O, Wednesday)
Filmed at the world premiere of The Night the Iguana - provided a unique
opportunity for cathode rubber-necking.
There were the show business personalities if not relaxing, at least dressed in
their finery to confront the audience
and the fans at Philharmonic Hall, in New York's Lincoln Centre.
The confrontation, however, was in part hampered by Jayne Meadows, actress wife
of Steve Allen, who grasped
the opportunity, and a sometimes faulty microphone, to out-talk and over-flatter
everyone in sight.
Apparently edited for Melbourne consumption (where was Barbra Streisand?), the
programme (was) divided into two:
the arrival of the glittering audience for the premiere, and the supper dance
"attended by some of the most famous waiters in town."

Steve locks the door on his Steve Allen Playhouse tonight with the final show of
his ever popular comedy series.
From a bare stage, without guests or studio audience, Steve will bid farewell to
his millions of loyal fans.
Taped highlights from the best shows over the past three years will be featured
with commentary by Steve Allen.
One sketch offers an answer to the question "What if Rodgers and Hammerstein or
Lerner and Lowe
made a musical out of "Dracula"? with Gabe Dell as Dracula, Jayne Meadows as the
Bride of Dracula,
and Allen as the Count's visiting nephew, Irving.
Another skit parodies the film "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" with Louis Nye
and Allen,
both in drag, in the Bette Davis and Joan Crawford roles, respectively.
Next, Johnny Carson joins Allen for a surprise 'Funny Fone Call' to a sleeping
Jack Paar.
A completely ad-libbed sketch features Allen and the spokesmodel for "National
Pear Week" in ancient Greek attire.
Additionally, stage manager, Johnny Wilson presents Allen with a certificate
from the crew for one share of Westinghouse stock;
footage is shown of Terry Gibbs and Allen jamming on the vibraphone; and Allen
sings "The Final Curtain".
