The bullet fragmented inside Karen, but the doctors tell Mack they got most
of the main pieces. The search is on for the kidnapped Abby, and we see
that Mark St. Claire has taken her to a yacht. Laura, who had wanted to
dump Greg after his revelations with the Wolfbridge Group, decides to go to
him because she is worried about him. The doctors did not tell Mack the
extent of Karen's condition, but they tell her that one of the bullet
fragments is lodged near her spine and is unable to be reached. She will
make what appears to be a full recovery, but over time the fragment will
shift toward her spine, causing paralysis, then death.

Greg charters a plane, but Mack finds out, and when push comes to shove,
Greg shoots Mark dead in front of Abby. Lilimae is shocked to find Joshua
Rush on her doorstep. He is the son of Lilimae's sister and Jonathan Rush,
and wants to get to know his aunt. Lilimae is visibly shaken. Karen has the
chance to submit to experimental surgery to remove the bullet fragment, but
remembering Sid's death in "experimental spinal surgery," she decides to
keep silent about her impending death, choosing one year of life over death
on an operating table. Seeing what appears to be her mother's recovery from
the shooting, Diana decides to move to New York. Not wishing to have Mack
around to see her die, Karen pretends not to want him back after his Wolfbridge deceptions.

Ben has a lot of questions concerning Greg's "Wyatt Earp" act on St.
Claire's yacht. Greg needs Abby's statement to the press to clear up the
growing scandal, but does not want to "owe" her. Gary decides that although
he does not trust Abby, he will take her back anyway...but he's not through
with her. He shows Abby the new designs for Lotus Point and makes it clear
that she will accept the redesign or nothing at all. Instead of high-rises
and shopping centers, LP will become an environmentally-friendly family
resort. Dr. Garner cannot convince Karen to tell Mack of her condition, nor
can he convince her to submit to the surgery. Lilimae is forced to admit
that Joshua is her son and not Val's cousin....Lilimae abandoned him just
as she had abandoned Val years before. Abby's woes at Lotus Point seem bad
enough, but Gary introduces Abby to her new partner at the complex: Karen.

Abby clears Greg's name in a TV press conference, so now he does "owe" her;
she ingratiates herself into Greg's campaign even more. With the purchase
of Pacific World Cable, a TV station that Ben works for, Abby has the means
to create a scandal for Greg's opponent. Joshua tears out of the house when
Lilimae tells him the truth, but Val catches him and shares her own
abandonment story with him...along with how close she and Lilimae are now.
He still wants to leave, however, to go back to the sheltered life provided
to him by his stern, preacher father. Karen is unable to carry her secret
around any longer and confides her condition to Gary, but still refuses to
reconcile with Mack and tell him. Lilimae stops Joshua from hopping the bus home.

wife, comes on to Mack when she sees how distanced he has become from
Karen. The Grand Opening of Lotus Point brings out everyone, but half the
guests are avoiding the other half! While snooping in Ben's computer, Abby
gets a shock: she finds a letter Ben was composing that mentions that Gary
is the father of Val's twins.

Having learned the paternity of Val's babies, Abby fears the twins will be
named the heir to Gary's fortune over her. Her fears are heightened when
she overhears the prospective parents discussing the best means to
reconcile an estranged couple. What she does not realize is that Gary and
Val are attempting to figure a way to get Karen and Mack back together!
Gary plays reverse psychology and urges Karen to file for divorce, thinking
she will balk; she calls his bluff and does file for divorce! It's election
day for Greg, and Jane is still urging Greg to withdraw from the race "for
his mental health"....and their marriage. He refuses to listen, so she says
she will not stick around to see him fall apart. Val becomes worried when
Joshua accepts a job offer from Abby at PWC; she also asks Mack to be her
labor coach. Abby discusses her worries over the twins with an associate, Scott Easton.

Stone-faced Jonathan Rush arrives in Knots Landing to visit his son.
Jonathan manages to spread misery and disdain everywhere he goes as he
observes the people in Joshua's life. There's Joshua's girlfriend,
Cathy--the ex-con; his mother, Lilimae--who ran out on two kids on separate
occasions; and Valene--who is having two babies out of wedlock. The visit
only seems to strengthen Joshua's resolve to stay in Knots Landing, though,
and especially strengthen his infatuation with Cathy. Greg, the new U.S.
Senator-elect, wants Mack and Laura to be part of his Washington staff.
Mack is reluctant to commit because of his problems with Karen, but Laura
tells Greg that she has no intentions of going "and becoming another Jane".
Karen is unwilling to listen to the complaints of Eric and Michael about
what a fool she's being for divorcing Mack, but the same statements from
Abby cause Karen to reel. Scott Easton, Abby's business associate, is seen
lunching with Dr. Ackerman, Val's doctor; the doctor soon prescribes some
pills for the soon-to-be mom. Joshua defies his father's orders to return home.

Bernie the bartender .... Cheryl Cantwell
Val continues to have cramps and takes the pills that Dr. Ackerman
prescribed for her. Joshua wonders why Ben doesn't take more of an interest
in becoming a new father. Val asks Ben to lie to everyone about the true
paternity of the babies. Dr. Ackerman calls Scott Easton and tells him that
they're getting closer. Easton tells Abby that she can expect an added
"bonus" in a few days. He tells her it's something that she's wanted for a
long time. Joshua tells Cathy that they made love because they were weak.
Reverend Kathrun gives Joshua some romantic advice. After giving Karen an
ultimatum, she agrees to get away with him for a while. They go up the
coast. On the beach, Karen comes close to telling Mack the truth, but she
doesn't. She says the reason she won't get together with him is because he
couldn't be true to his job everytime danger was involved, and she would
never want to take that away from him. Kelly, Ben's assistant, doesn't give
Ben the message that Val wants to have dinner with him. Laura agrees to
accept Greg's job offer of Chief Assistant of the Senate Committee of Land
Management. Joshua and Lilimae go to Isadora's to watch Cathy sing. Ben
goes away on business to San Diego. Scott Easton tells Abby that Lotus
Point no longer has a water problem. She thinks that's his bonus, but he
tells her it's yet to come. At the resort, Karen cries and tells Mack she
wishes this moment could last forever. All alone, Val goes into labor. She
finally reaches Eric and Michael and they drive her to the hospital. During
labor, Val starts to hemmorage and against her will, Dr. Ackerman gives her
anesthesia. Val becomes disoriented, but she never loses consciousness. She
hears both babies cry and gets a glimpse of them. With everyone away, Gary
is the only person who can come to the hospital for Val. After the
delivery, Dr. Ackerman tells Val, "I'm afraid we lost the babies. They were
stillborn." Val knows she saw them and heard them cry. Ackerman tells here
that her mind played tricks on her because of the sedation. Gary calls Abby
and gives her the bad news. Then, Abby gets another call. An anonymous
caller says, "Mrs. Ewing-- Our agent neglected to get the blood type of the
father. It's essential for the paperwork." Abby doesn't know what the
caller is talking about. He says it's for "the children in question." The
caller thinks Abby can't talk and he says he'll be getting back to her later.

Abby gets a phone call from Dr. Ackerman, wanting to know information
pertaining to the placement of "the babies". Abby has no idea who the man
is or what he is talking about, but it soon becomes clear; she frantically
searches for Scott Easton to find out what can be done to rectify the
situation. Val is adamant that she heard the babies' cries, but everyone
just assumes it is her grief talking. Ironically, it is Thanksgiving, and
everyone in KL is invited to Karen's for dinner (yes, even Abby). During
preparations for dinner, Karen experiences her first paralytic episode but
tells no one. Gary offers to bring Val from her house to Karen's for
dinner, and somewhere between the two houses, Val reverts to the days when
she and Gary were still married.

Mack's investigation of murders in the Tidal Basin has his juices flowing,
but progress is slow-going. His associate, Jezik, is beaten up when he gets
too close to an important lead. Abby's attempts to find Scott Easton at
Galveston Industries hit a dead end, literally; no one admits he ever
worked there. Rather than tell what she knows about the fate of the babies,
Abby keeps it all to herself. When her protests fall on deaf ears, Val
believes her friends want to have her committed, so she disappears in the
night. Karen's bouts of paralysis in her hands continue, but she refuses to
reveal the truth to her friends and family.

First stop for the runaway Val is Enoch, Nevada, where she exhibits strange
mood swings that show she has lost grasp of her identity. She comes on to a
strange man in a bar (!) and his wife is not amused, to say the least. Paul
Galveston is making friends with Gary, offering to help him sharpen his
business instincts. Paul offers Gary some land adjacent to Lotus Point at
$50,000 an acre, which is thought to be a steal; the land is called Empire
Valley. As Karen, Gary, and Abby seek out private investigators to help in
the search for Val, Val has assumed the identity of Verna, the heroine of
her novel, Nashville Junction, and taken a waitressing job in Tennessee.
Karen has another paralytic episode with her hand.

Joshua's appearance on A Better Tomorrow was supposed to be a televised
plea to Val to come home, but his appearance generates more fan mail than
leads. Abby seems eager to capitalize on the new interest shown in the
religious show that airs on her station, so she urges Joshua to appear
again. Karen's hand goes numb while she is driving with Michael, and Mack
will no longer accept her excuses as to what is wrong. She tells him the
whole story of the bullet fragment, the increasing paralysis, etc. Paul is
pumping Gary up with big plans to develop Empire Valley. Greg, upon hearing
of Paul and Gary's alliance, wants nothing to do with either of them, especially Paul.

Though Nashville Junction was not a best-seller in its original issuance,
Val's disappearance has made the book a hot seller. Despite the new
acclaim, Val (as Verna) knows nothing about the newfound success. She
attends a social with her new beau, Parker Winslow, but does not know he
already has a girlfriend. Abby gets Joshua to agree to appear on A Better
Tomorrow regularly, squeezing Rev. Kathrun (the host) even further from the
center of the show. Cathy fears that Joshua's newfound celebrity will
change him. Abby's PI is the first to catch up to Val in Tennessee; he
calls Abby to tell her what has happened. After a lot of soul-searching,
Karen decides to have the spinal surgery to remove the bullet fragment from her spine.

the topic of conversation: Paul's demands that Greg put a stop to Mack's
investigation into the Tidal Basin Murders. Abby meets with Freilich, the
PI who found Val in Tennessee, and he wants more money just to keep his
mouth shut. Paul is seen to be in possession of Scott Easton's papers,
including adoption papers for Val's babies. Paul meets with Freilich to
find out what happened to Valene, and then has Freilich beaten up and sent
away. Next, Paul meets with Abby and reveals his plans: he intends to find
Val's twins, then tell Gary the entire story of the twins' abduction as
well as Gary's being their father. Karen spends the entire episode in
surgery to remove the bullet fragments from her spine. When the episode
ends, the doctor tells Mack that the surgery was a complete success.

Abby arrives in Shula to see "Verna" for herself and is mystified when
Val/Verna does not recognize her. Mack's murder investigation snags a new
lead that ties the murders closer to Galveston Industries. When Greg
refuses to help Paul get Mack away from the investigation, Greg finds that
he is being dropped from key senatorial committees. Joshua's appearances on
television are becoming popular, but his jealousy of Cathy's friends begins
to change him. A friend of a murder victim spots a man she believes killed
her roommate; Karen also recognizes the man--he works for Galveston
Industries. Greg confesses to Laura that Paul does have a certain hold over
him--he's Paul's illegitimate son! Val/Verna's boyfriend, Parker Winslow,
puts the pieces together concerning Val and immediately proposes marriage
because he sees dollar signs. Paul is about to tell Gary about the
paternity of Val's babies when Abby returns to tell Gary that she has found
Val in Tennessee, beating Paul to the punch.

Paul's energies are directed at finding "the Ewing twins" when they should
be directed toward halting Mack's investigation. Going to that diner where
"Verna" is working reminds Gary of how Val and Gary met when they were
teens; too bad it doesn't remind Val of much at all! Abby is pumping up
Joshua's ego, and Joshua doesn't mind one bit when his appearances on
Reverend Kathrun's show eat into the reverend's time. When Abby tries to
blackmail Cathy out of Joshua's life, she finds that Cathy can blackmail
Abby right back. Gary's attempts to jog Val's memory are frustrating for
Gary as well as viewers....he ends up getting beaten up by Parker's friends
and spooking "Verna" so much that she doesn't want to see Gary at all.
"Verna" does, however, have a flash of memory when Gary reenacts the moment
when they met. It frightens her so much that she agrees to marry Parker.
Paul, meanwhile, has found the babies.

chooses to believe Abby's version over Cathy's. "Verna" is running away
from Gary by hastily marrying Parker. Gary shows "Verna" a copy of
Nashville Junction as proof that she is not Verna, but she refuses to be
swayed. Paul is intent on planting Gary and Abby in the middle of the
Empire Valley development; he is seen taking heart medication. Gary crashes
Parker and "Verna's" wedding to "show just cause".

To slow Mack's investigation, Paul gets two employees to sign confessions
of guilt; these two promptly flee the country. Parker and "Verna's" wedding
falls apart when Parker lets it slip that he knew about Val's condition.
When Gary brings the still-disoriented Val back to Knots Landing she
assumes that Gary is still her husband; Ben feels he has to step carefully.
Ben soon spots a truckload of sophisticated radio equipment being driven
into Empire Valley. Joshua displays abilities to manipulate those around
him. When Gary sets Val straight about their no longer being married, she
responds by having an all-night scrubbing binge in the kitchen. It is Mack
who is finally able to get through to her. Paul seeks to get through to
Gary once he learns Gary has returned to town. He says he has something
important to tell Gary, and Abby gets worried. She pays Paul a visit, and
Paul has a stroke. Abby, not realizing how serious he is, leaves with the notebook.

Abby's elation over getting Easton's notebook is short-lived when she
realizes that the missing pages from the book are the ones she needs. Since
Paul's stroke is being kept secret, Abby pays another visit, hoping to get
the pages. Instead, she sees a vanload of medical equipment. Greg could
care less about Paul's condition, or at least that's what he tells Laura;
he's being urged by Paul's staff to take the reins at Galveston Industries
but he does not want them. In the course of Mack's investigation of
Galveston Industries, he came into possession of the missing pages which
Abby is so frantic to retrieve; too bad Mack has no idea what they are
about! Val's therapy is going slowly, and is not being helped by Joshua's
taunting; she is sane enough, however, to think that Gary could only be
this concerned if he still was in love with her.

a small town where Galveston Industries had had a chemical spill a few
years before. Their clinic is overrun with patients exhibiting symptoms of
long-term chemical exposure. Val starts regaining her memory and tells
Karen that she remembers every detail about the babies' delivery..including
their cries. Karen is so moved by Val's certainty that she begins
investigating the circumstances surrounding the births. Laura is begginning
to have her doubts about a future with Greg. Lyla Maxwell, the Galveston
secretary who was murdered, had recently visited Wesphall to tell everyone
that the accident was no accident; GI wanted an excuse to remove those
people from Empire Valley. For her efforts, Lyla was murdered.

suggests Cathy sing on the show. After taking the helm at GI, Greg learns
what Paul was planning for Empire Valley. On the surface, the land will be

he can't understand why Paul would give that whole complex to Gary. Cathy
is having serious doubts about marrying Joshua, especially given his "power

Val's twins, finally pays off: he's at a bridge tournament in Las Vegas. As
guests gather for the wedding, Eric reveals the mysterious girlfriend,
Whitney. He seems almost disappointed that no one makes an issue of his
dating a black girl; he had expected some controversy; so much for being a
"star-crossed lover"! Greg wants Gary to sell out to him, but Gary refuses.
Gary has no idea what lies underneath Empire Valley, but Coblentz, a mole

away from him. Abby is getting pressured from all sides; when Olivia and
Brian's carpool gets into a minor accident, Abby is forced to consider how
she would feel if her kids were taken from her. It's an odd match when
Ruth, Laura, and Lilimae have lunch together. Ruth is baiting Laura
constantly, and when Laura decides she can't take it any more, she leaves.
Ruth begins grilling the gossip-happy Lilimae about Laura. Abby enlists
Greg's help with finding the babies and trying to find a way to wipe away
the trail that leads to her part in the kidnapping. Greg got the
all-important Easton papers from Mack after Mack found nothing useful in
them for his investigation, and has no intention of giving them to Abby!
Ruth, who thinks Abby is more suitable for her son than Laura, puts plans
into action to get Laura out of the picture. Greg, meanwhile, is seen
watching Sheila Fisher push the twins down the street in a stroller.

babies grows as more people join the search. Ruth tries to make a deal with
Abby over the pages Abby needs. After Laura tells Ruth off in a restaurant
full of people, Ruth offers the pages to Abby in exchange for Abby breaking
up Laura and Greg. Since Abby knows that Karen and Co. are getting close,
she agrees. Karen and Ben pose as a couple willing to illegally adopt a
baby in order to meet with the man they believe handled the adoption of the
twins. They don't realize that the man is on to them. Val comes running

Joshua's new obsession is conceiving a baby with Cathy, and is unwilling to

that HE was behind the bugs and such, and Gary announces that he doesn't
want to be a part of all this any more. Too Bad! Thank goodness Val does
not recognize Nurse Wilson when she arrives on Karen's doorstep; she tells
all to Karen after Val has left. Dr. Ackerman paid her to keep silent about
her role in stealing Val's twins and putting hem up for adoption illegally,
but her conscience can't allow her to carry on. After Joshua tries once
again to undermine Val's self-confidence, Ben knocks Joshua on his rump!
Dr. Ackerman has gone to a bridge tournament in San Diego...and so have
Mack, Karen, and Nurse Wilson. Laura sees Abby in a robe at Greg's and
