4.1 [54] Knots Landing: A BRAND NEW DAY

The fourth season opens with Val avoiding Gary and the rest of the
cul-de-sac at a beach motel. Joe informs Lilimae that if Val doesn't
surface soon, her book will never be published. Later, Lilimae takes Val to
Rusty's ranch, hoping he can provide her some comfort. When Gary discovers
where Val is staying, he goes there and tries to bring her home. Val
resists, and when Rusty tells Gary to leave, a fight ensues between the
two. Gary reluctantly leaves and heads back to Abby's. After finding out he
had gone to see Val, Abby is no mood to comfort him until he announces his
father's will is due to be read soon. The next day, Gary arrives home to a
moving truck at the house. Val informs him that she is moving back and
throwing him out. Later, Abby sends a copy of Val's novel to Gary's brother
J.R. Meanwhile, Karen discovers the men responsible for Sid's accident were
set free. She pays U.S. attorney Mack McKenzie a visit to get some answers.
Over dinner, Mack tells Karen the men got acquitted because of the weak
case against them. Karen believes the prosecution overlooked something, so
Mack gives her the trial transcripts. Joe pleads with his sister to put it
to rest, but Karen is convinced there is something in the transcripts.
After firing Gary due to his extra-cirricular activities, Karen promotes
her head mechanic Wayne, who is later revealed as one of the men connected
to Sid's accident.

J.R. Ewing pays Knots a visit after receiving partial manuscript of Val's
book. Abby agrees to give J.R. the rest of the manuscript if he reveals
what Gary is due to inherit from his father. J.R. says Gary is due to
inherit a lot of money which makes Abby very excited. J.R. also buys the
company that is set to publish Val's book. Joe tells Mack that giving Karen
the transcripts will just make her more determined to find Sid's killers
herself. Mack warns Karen to give up her search because of the danger
involved. Karen resists, but later decides to return the transcripts and
not get involved. Meanwhile, Wayne visits Roy and Frank, the men who were
responsible for Sid's accident, and suggests they use his position at the
dealership to sell stolen parts. Laura goes into labor at Val's book party.
On the way to the hospital, she and Richard get stranded in a ditch.
Richard is forced to deliver the baby in the back seat of the car. The baby
boy does not breathe initially, but Richard revives him in time. They
decide to name him Daniel.

Val continues to avoid everyone, including Gary who wants to work out their
problems. Meanwhile, Gary is impressed by an unknown singer named Ciji. He
convinces Kenny to listen to her, who is also very impressed. Lilimae
tricks Gary and Val into meeting at a parking garage to settle their
affairs. Gary tells Val he wants to work out their problems, but Val
decides not to give him another chance and tells him good-bye. Wayne tells
Karen about a great parts inventory that she agrees to purchase. Later,
Wayne tells his stolen parts supplier that the deal has been completed.
Karen later becomes suspicious of Wayne when he lies about going to the
dentist the day of Sid's accident. Karen goes to Mack with her suspicions,
but Mack implores her not to pursue Wayne because he may be linked to some
very dangerous people. Meanwhile, Richard puts down a deposit on a
restaurant, but Laura is not sure he is ready for such a responsibility so
shortly after his nervous breakdown.

A smooth talking messenger named Chip Roberts from Val's publicity agency
cons his way into preparing Val for her appearance on the Mike Douglas
show. Val winds up being a big hit on the show and everyone from the
cul-de-sac watches, including Gary and Abby. Richard continues his
preparations for opening night at the restaurant. Karen's suspicions of
Wayne continue to grow and Mack once again warns of the danger Wayne could
to pose her and the dealership. Later, Wayne gets a visit from Roy and
Frank who want to make sure the parts deal is still on schedule. Meanwhile,
Kenny arranges a demo for Ciji.

Wayne informs Karen that the parts will be delivered later in the day. A
nervous Karen goes to the bank to withdraw the money. Joe tells Mack that
Karen was acting very strange and was going to the bank to withdraw a lot
of money. Later, Karen notices someone tailing her, so she rushes to Mack's
office where Mack admits to having her tailed. Karen admits to trapping
Wayne and hopes that Mack could now arrest him. Mack explains that would be
a conflict of interest because of their relationship. Later, Mack places a
call to a friend asking to leak a story about stolen parts being delivered
to the dealership. Karen goes to the dealership to scope out the delivery,
but gets caught by Roy and Frank. At that moment, Angelo, the mobster who
paid Roy and Frank to stay out of stolen parts arrives. Mack also arrives
which is enough to scare off Angelo. Mack tells Roy, Frank, and Wayne that
they are free to go since he has no evidence. Not wanting to be killed by
Angelo is enough for Wayne to admit that he was paid by Roy and Frank to
cut the break line on Sid's car. The confession is enough for Mack to
arrest everyone. Meanwhile, Gary gets a telegram from Dallas saying the
will is to be read soon. Gary goes to Val and asks if she would come to the
reading with him. Val is shocked he would ask such a thing and tells him to
leave. Later, Abby throws a fit when Gary does not immediately tell her the
news. Richard officially opens his restaurant, Daniel, with a big opening
night party. Kenny continues to annoy Ginger with his obsession of Ciji's music.
4.6 [59] Knots Landing: "NEW BEGINNINGS"

Gary heads to Dallas for the reading of his father's will. Strict
conditions are tied to the inheritance, which has Gary depressed about what
his father truly thought of him. Abby arrives to comfort Gary and begins to
figure out all the ways they can use his money. Brother J.R. even stops by
to congratulate Gary and make sure Abby keeps him out of Dallas and the
Ewing business. Meanwhile, Val's book tour takes her to the same hotel Gary
and Abby are staying. She later runs into them in the lobby. Even with all
her success, Val still appears shaken when she sees Gary and Abby together.
Back in Knots Landing, Chip is busy sweet talking his way into Val and
Lilimae's home. His boss, Bess Riker, fires him and throws him out of her
place. Chip sweet talks Lilimae into staying at the house while Val is
away. He also begins flirting with Diana, which makes Lilimae question his
intentions. Mack pleads with Karen to go away with him for some peace and
quiet. Mack also angers Diana with his cocky personality, which leaves
Karen concerned. Kenny takes Ciji's demo tape to his boss, who really likes
it, but maintains he cannot offer her a contract for economic reasons.
4.7 [60] Knots Landing: "INVESTMENTS"

Mack and Karen seem to be getting closer to one another, and Mack lives to
regret the suggestion that he and Karen go away on a camping trip. They
fight over his assumption that they would be sleeping together. Diana, who
hates the idea of Mack and Karen together, gets Chip a car from KLM just to
spite her mother. Chip, actually, is using three women at once (Diana,
Ciji, and Lilimae] Knots Landing: to further his own agenda. Joe leaves for New
York,
convinced that his sister is in capable hands. Abby invests money in
Richard's restaurant with strings attached. Gary, meanwhile, wants to buy a
ranch, much to Abby's chagrin.
4.8 [61] Knots Landing: "MAN IN THE MIDDLE"

Chip continues to charm and sweet talk his way to the top. First, he uses
Diana to meet some important people at her country club. Then he whines to
Lilimae about his limited wardrobe, until she loans him the money to buy a
jacket. He also begins to handle more than Ciji's career, as the two sleep
together. Mack sees right through the charm however, and his continued
snubbing of Chip causes Diana to dislike him even more. Meanwhile, Abby,
Gary, and Kenny convince Richard to let Ciji sing in his restaurant after
hours. Richard is not thrilled by the idea and feels his restaurant might
turn into a night club. On Ciji's opening night, Chip gets caught in the
middle of Diana, Lilimae, and Ciji. In the end, he uses his charm and lies
to make everyone happy.
4.9 [62] Knots Landing: "THE BEST KEPT SECRET"

Diana decides to make peace with Mack and goes to his apartment. Mack is
very surprised to see her and Diana is even more surprised to see a
half-dressed woman come out of the bathroom. When Mack goes to explain the
situation to her he winds up confessing to Karen. Later, Mack tries to make
up with Karen and even says that he loves her. Karen insists the
relationship is over, but is obviously in love with him. Meanwhile, Abby
continues to sweeten she and Gary's investments by walking all over
everyone else. First, she brings in big time record producer Jeff Munson to
listen to Ciji. Kenny is very upset and insists Munson will want to control
everything. Abby also uses her upper hand with Richard, insisting he allow
Ciji to sing at the restaurant earlier in the evening. Later, Laura notices
a check made out to Abby from Richard. Richard explains about the loan from
Abby and Gary, which makes Laura question her decision to try their
marriage again.
4.10 [63] Knots Landing: "EMERGENCY"

with Gary and Abby. While there, Diana's kidneys fail and she is forced
into dialysis treatments. Karen leans heavily on Mack during the crisis
despite a brief spat they had had. Doctors tell Karen that Diana is a
perfect candidate for a kidney transplant that might end her need for
dialysis; the perfect donor (in fact, the only suitable donor] Knots Landing: is
Abby.
Ginger is angered by Kenny's neglect of her career in favor of Ciji's.
4.11 [64] Knots Landing: "ABBY'S CHOICE"

Abby is told by Diana's doctor that she is a suitable kidney donor. Abby
decides to go through with the risky operation. Karen tries to thank her,
but Abby says she does not want thanks and she's only doing it for her
brother's daughter. The operation is successful and Diana's body accepts
the kidney. Meanwhile, Ciji is stood up by Chip on her birthday. Laura
comes to the rescue and invites Ciji over for dinner and a movie. Kenny
continues to hear rumors that Gary and Abby are going to sell their record
label to Jeff Munson. Kenny confronts Gary who denies it, saying he would
never do that to his partner.
4.12 [65] Knots Landing: "THE BLOCK PARTY"

money for charity. Mack's father, Pete, comes to visit...and to tell Mack
that he's dying of leukemia. It's obvious that the two have had problems
from way back, but Lillimae tells Pete that it's never too late to start
over (like she did with Val] Knots Landing:. Jeff Munson is quite taken with
Valene; Diana
spots Chip kissing Ciji at the block party.
4.13 [66] Knots Landing: "CUTTING THE TIES THAT BIND"

Val contemplates signing her divorce papers and officially putting her life
with Gary behind. Lilimae urges her to sign them, but Val is just not
ready. Later, Jeff asks Val to go to New York with him. Val has such a
wonderful time, she finally signs the papers. Abby closes the deal to sell
Ciji's contract and the record label to Munson. Gary decides to support the
deal after he and Kenny continue to argue over Ciji's album. Kenny is very
upset when Abby and Gary tell him about the deal to sell the contract. Gary
maintains that Munson still wants Kenny to produce the album, but Kenny
refuses to work with Munson. Meanwhile, Ciji gets the news that she's
pregnant with Chip's child. Ciji begins to have second thoughts about
becoming a big star. Chip is not pleased with the news, knowing a baby
would jeopardize his own agenda. Chip also agrees to turn over some
manuscript from Val's new book to the head of a PR firm he is trying to get
a job with. Meanwhile, Ciji turns to Laura again for a heart to heart talk.
After Laura gives Richard the brush off to talk to Ciji, he becomes jealous
of the attention Laura is showing Ciji and not their marriage.
4.14 [67] Knots Landing: "AND TEDDY MAKES THREE"

Mack asks Karen to marry him. Coincidentally, about the same time, Karen's
old boyfriend Teddy comes to town for a visit. He and Karen have a
wonderful time together, and when Karen does not give Mack an answer right
away, Teddy thinks he and Karen could have a relationship again. Mack
becomes very jealous and breaks off the engagement. Karen later realizes
how much she loves Mack and says yes to the proposal. Meanwhile, Gary and
Munson hire another producer thinking Kenny was not interested in the job.
However, Kenny was expecting the job anyway, and is very upset when Gary
informs him that he's out of the deal. Munson steps in and offers Kenny
another job, but Kenny still does not want to work for anyone but himself.
Later, Ginger scolds Gary and Abby for double crossing her husband. Chip
inches closer to getting the job with the PR firm he gave Val's partial
manuscript to. Val notices some of her pages are missing, but Chip denies
knowing anything about them. Later, the pages mysteriously reappear under
Val's bed. Chip also becomes more frustrated with Ciji when she reaffirms
that she is having their baby with or without him.
4.15 [68] Knots Landing: "TO HAVE AND TO HOLD"

Karen and Mack try to plan their wedding, but with all the interruptions,
Mack whisks Karen off to Las Vegas to get married. Gary goes over to
Kenny's to work out their differences. Kenny is not interested and reminds
Gary of all the rotten things he's done lately, like selling stolen parts
at the dealership and fooling around behind Val's back. His words really
hit home with Gary, but Abby tells him not to worry, they don't need
Kenny's friendship. Meanwhile, Val's manuscript pages appear in a local
tabloid. The manuscript is all about the break up of she and Gary's
marriage and all the terrible things Gary has done over the years.
Circulation of the paper quickly spreads, eventually making it to Gary.
Gary rushes to Val's house to confront her, but is quickly turned away by
Jeff. Later, Gary pleads with Abby that they need to talk about the
terrible things they've been doing to everyone lately. Abby agrees to talk
the next day, but Gary awakes to Abby leaving for an appointment. With
nowhere else to turn, Gary contemplates taking a drink.
4.16 [69] Knots Landing: "A NEW FAMILY"

Mr. and Mrs. MacKenzie return from Las Vegas to a mixed reception. Eric
resents being usurped as the "Man of the House", while Michael is thrilled
to have Mack as a stepfather. Diana still has reservations. Ciji's first
recording session is ruined by a drunken Gary's arrival; Ciji tells
best-friend Laura that she is pregnant. Jealous Richard believes that Laura
and Ciji are lovers!
4.17 [70] Knots Landing: "THE MORNING AFTER"

Gary passes out and later wakes up at Ciji's after his night of drinking.
He tries desperately to stop drinking, but continues to fail. Val continues
to feel responsible for Gary's predicament. Karen, Mack, and Jeff try to
give her moral support, but Val is still very much in love with Gary.
Meanwhile, Abby tells Gary she is not going to play mother to him like Val.
Abby also talks with her lawyer, Jim Westmont, about protecting herself
while Gary is on his binge. Gary overhears the conversation, which makes
him run off again. Chip's world begins to crumble when Ciji finds out the
truth about him. She finds a newspaper article in his briefcase that
reveals Chip's real name is Tony Fenice and he is wanted for assault. Ciji
threatens to expose Chip if he does not leave her alone, but the threat
only upsets Chip even more. Ciji also angers Richard because of the time
she is spending with Laura. Richard is sure Ciji and Laura are having some
kind of homosexual relationship.
4.18 [71] Knots Landing: "CELEBRATION"

Gary winds up at Ciji's apartment where he sleeps off his latest drunk.
Abby arrives looking for Gary, but Ciji tells her Gary is not there.
Richard and Laura's marriage continues to suffer and Richard blames it on
Ciji. Laura says their failed marriage has nothing to do with Ciji, but
Richard is convinced she and Laura are involved. Knowing Ciji could expose
him, Chip prepares to skip town. Diana asks Chip if she can go with him,
and later tells Karen that she and Chip are going to New York soon. Karen
and Mack know Chip is a creep and Karen promises Chip she will do
everything she can to stop Diana. Later, Chip tries again to make up with
Ciji, but she tells him to get lost. Gary heads back to the streets
drinking. Later, he calls Val begging for help. Lilimae hangs up the phone
as Val is talking to him. Val is enraged and rushes off to look for Gary.
Val goes to Ciji's looking for Gary, and the two argue. Ciji accuses Val of
destroying Gary by writing those terrible things about him. Val
accidentally pushes Ciji into the coffee table and leaves very upset. Val
later receives another phone call from Gary. Gary promises everything will
be okay. Meanwhile, everyone awaits Ciji's arrival at Daniel for a big
performance. Richard is late arriving. Gary and Ciji are also absent.
Munson asks Ginger to sing until Ciji arrives. Later, Ciji's dead body
washes onto the beach.
4.19 [72] Knots Landing: "THE LOSS OF INNOCENCE"

Two joggers find Ciji's body on the beach. Gary awakens on the beach and
begins to walk home. He comes upon the authorities and sees Ciji's body.
Horrified, he rushes home to get a drink. Gary informs Abby that Ciji is
dead. Abby asks Gary if he was with Ciji last night, but Gary does not
remember. Chip and Laura head over to Ciji's to see if she's there.
Meanwhile, Mack goes to police headquarters to inquire about a dead young
woman that he hopes is not Ciji. However, his fears are confirmed when the
dead body is Ciji. Initially, her death is ruled an accident, but homicide
detective Janet Baines is called in to investigate. Everyone in Knots
Landing is shocked by the murder. The autopsy shows that Ciji was pregnant,
which officially makes the case a murder. Several people are called in for
questioning and many are suspects. Gary decides to answer questions without
the help of his attorney. He tells the police he does not remember anything
from that night. The police arrest him under the suspicion of murder.
4.20 [73] Knots Landing: "THE FATAL BLOW"

Gary's bail is set at five million dollars. Gary refuses to ask for help
from his family, so Abby explores using emergency provisions in Gary's
inheritance. However, after seeing Gary in the detoxification ward, she
decides that is the best place for him. Det. Baines tells Mack that Ciji
was killed in her apartment by a blow to the head and then moved to the
ocean. Mack insists the case against Gary is weak. Chip worries he may be a
suspect when the police discover he was the father of Ciji's baby. He
decides to tell the police about he and Ciji's "brief" affair. When Karen
tells Val how Ciji was killed, Val thinks she may have killed Ciji when she
pushed her into the coffee table. Val also thinks Gary tried to protect her
by moving the body. That would explain the mysterious phone call from Gary
on the night of the murder. Val decides to go to the police and confess to
the murder. Meanwhile, Richard and Laura pack up Ciji's things. Richard
tries to reach out to Laura and comfort her, but Laura says she just wants
to be alone. Richard starts to realize their marriage may really be over.
4.21 [74] Knots Landing: "THE BURDEN OF PROOF"

Det. Baines and Morrison question Val about Ciji's murder. Val explains
that she and Ciji fought and how Ciji fell into the coffee table. Det.
Baines asks Val if Ciji was alive when she left. Later, the police take Val
to Ciji's apartment to reenact the episode. They also bring Gary, who goes
crazy when he sees Val. Gary screams that Val had nothing to do with the
murder. Gary's lawyer insists as along as Val has confessed, the case
against his client is weak. Ultimately, the police let Val go when it is
determined Ciji's death was caused by another blow to the head. Val's
release keeps Gary in jail with a date at a preliminary hearing. Lilimae
scolds Chip for giving Val's manuscript to the PR firm and tells him to
pack his bags and leave before Val comes home. Meanwhile, Richard prepares
to leave town. He cashes an insurance policy, makes repairs around the
house, and says good-bye to the kids. Late one evening, he sneaks out of
the house, and after one last look, drives away, leaving Knots Landing forever.
4.22 [75] Knots Landing: WILLING VICTIMS

Val asks Mack if there is anything she can do to help Gary. Mack says if Gary
does not want help, no one can do anything.
Val insists she can get through to Gary if she could only see him. Meanwhile,
Abby continues to play both sides of the
fence. She does not want Gary in jail, but also does not want him to be
completely free, since that would stand in her way
of controlling his interests. Gary's lawyer says the D.A. has no solid evidence
and Gary would most likely be set free
after the preliminary hearing. Abby asks Jim Westmont to fire Gary's lawyer and
represent Gary at the trial. Val finally
gets in to see Gary and after some resistance, Gary listens to Val tell him to
stop playing the martyr and help clear
himself. Meanwhile, Kenny gets a job offer in Nashville working for Jeff Munson.
He agrees to take the job only if Ginger
gets a recording contract. Kenny and Ginger decide to leave town and start a new
life. Laura realizes that Richard has
skipped town when she receives a cashed insurance policy for any restaurant
debts. Laura decides that Richard left town
because he killed Ciji. Karen tells Laura that Richard left because he finally
realized the marriage was over, but Laura
goes to the police and insists Richard is the man they should be looking for.
Diana and Chip prepare to leave for New York.
Karen forbids Diana to leave with him, which only makes Diana want to leave
more. Chip says good-bye to Lilimae with one
ast sweet talking speech. Later, a private investigator visits Lilimae and gives
her a wanted page for a Tony Fenice who
is wanted in Seattle for assault and battery. Lilimae gives the notice to Karen
who rushes home to warn Diana. However,
it is too late as Diana and Chip are gone.
