The third season opens with authorities rescuing Sid from the car that went
over the cliff onto the beach. They rush him to the hospital and put him
into traction. The crash caused his spinal cord to be damaged and as a
result, paralyzed from the neck down. The doctor tells Karen that the
paralysis may be temporary, but they would just have to wait. Later, Sid
falls into a deep coma, but eventually wakes up and even regains some
feeling in his arms and legs. Meanwhile, Gary feels very responsible for
the accident. Abby continues to look for her kids while hoping that her
brother's condition improves.

Sid's partial movement in his arms and legs turns out to be only temporary.
A blood clot forms along the spinal cord causing his paralysis to return.
The doctor tells Sid and Karen that surgery would relieve the pressure
along the cord, but would also be risky due to his weak state. Sid has to
decide between risking his life to regain full movement or remaining
paralyzed for the rest of his life. Karen tries to convince him not to have
the surgery, but Sid decides to go ahead with it. While in surgery, he goes
into cardiac arrest and dies. The doctor breaks the news to Karen, who
relays it to Abby and the kids. Karen later plays a tape Sid recorded
before the surgery in which he says his love for her and the kids will
never die.

Following the funeral, the Fairgates try to adjust to life without Sid. The
adjustment is especially hard for Karen, who tries to bury the pain inside.
Diana insists not talking about the pain is not healthy for the family, but
Karen refuses to listen. Karen takes over the dealership and tells
employees that it will be business as usual. She fires Abby because of her
involvement in doctoring the books. Karen allows Gary to stay, but loses
her emotions when she sees him sitting in Sid's chair. Meanwhile, Ginger
gives birth to a baby girl.

Val notices her mother on a television news report after she helps capture
a purse snatcher. Lilimae has been in L.A. for a year and a half and
sometimes living on the street while searching for her big music break.
Later Lilimae gets arrested for shoplifting. Val and Gary agree to take
Lilimae into their home so she does not have to go jail. Meanwhile, Abby
continues to search for her kids and gets no help or information out of
Jeff's mother.

A postcard from Olivia helps Abby locate Jeff and the kids. After finding
them, she makes nice with Jeff and convinces him to remarry her. On the day
of the ceremony, Abby never arrives at the courthouse. However, she serves
Jeff with a restraining order, barring him from ever seeing the children
again. Richard's boss asks him to provide some "entertainment" for a
visiting VIP client. Meanwhile, Karen asks Gary to teach her how to sell
cars. She surprises him by selling several cars to man who wants to use
them to develop alternate fuels.
3.6 [37] Knots Landing: "ONE OF A KIND"

Karen's old boyfriend Teddy comes to town in time for the Christmas
holiday. He takes an instant liking to Diana, and later admits to Karen his
suspicion that Diana is his daughter. Karen argues that is impossible, even
though she got pregnant while seeing him and Sid. Karen finds a photograph
of Sid's grandmother who looks just like Diana, but is reluctant to show
Teddy when she overhears him talking about not being able to see his own
kids anymore. Karen later tells him it is possible that Diana is his
daughter. Meanwhile, Richard gives Laura a new car for Christmas. However,
Laura's boss Scooter tops Richard's gift by giving her a brand new
Mercedes.

Richard's boss asks him to organize a party complete with high class
hookers in order to impress a group of potential Japanese investors.
Richard reluctantly agrees and asks that his legal proposal for the
investors be considered. Richard informs Laura that their weekend trip has
to be canceled so he can attend the "party". After the party, Richard helps
a passed out hooker back to her place. He helps her wake up, but passes out
himself until the next morning. Richard tries to explain the incident to
Laura, but she figures it is another one of his lies. Meanwhile, the
dealership is targeted for an IRS audit. When Karen can't understand Abby's
bookkeeping, she reluctantly asks her to come back to work.
3.8 [39] Knots Landing: "MISTAKEN MOTIVES"

Val suggests to Karen that she attend a grief therapy session that her
widowed contractor recommended. Karen reluctantly attends and becomes good
friends with the same contractor, Bill. The two become good friends and
talk about losing their loved ones. When Bill is ready to take the next
step, Karen insists it is too soon after Sid's death to get involved with
anyone. Diana becomes very jealous of her mother's new friend and rebels by
flurting with a delinquent guy she really does not like. He and Diana wind
up getting arrested which leads to a heart to heart talk with Karen.
Meanwhile, Kenny and Ginger have trouble getting the baby to sleep until
Lilimae shows them her mama's secret.
3.9 [40] Knots Landing: "THE ROSE AND THE BRIAR"

Lilimae gets hustled by Jackson Mobley who thinks she's rich because of her
Ewing relation. He tells stories about his days as a road manager for some
of the biggest country stars. Val warns Lilimae that she is being hustled,
but she is blinded by his tall tales. Meanwhile, Jackson steals some money
from the Wards for travel, then convinces Lilimae to run off to Vegas and
get married. In Vegas, Lilimae and Jackson discover the truth about each
other. They run a scam to get Lilimae a job in a lounge. Val and Gary
discover the truth about Jackson and rush to Vegas to take Lilimae home.
Meanwhile, Richard is continually hounded by members of the firm who want
to be set up with some "entertainment". He takes his frustrations out on
Laura which ruins all attempts to make their marriage work again. Abby
begins to make a play for Gary by asking him to play Daddy in a school
function for Olivia.
3.10 [41] Knots Landing: "THE THREE SISTERS"

Laura takes the women of the cul-de-sac to an old house her firm is trying
to sell. When Karen's car does not start, they are forced to spend the
night there. The house is "haunted" by three little girls whose mother was
killed by a crazed husband. The girls lived alone for years in the house
until their death. Val feels the need to be a mother to the girls since her
daughter was taken away from her so many years ago. Lilimae is afraid Val
wants to die in order to be with the girls. Lilimae tells Val how much she
loves and needs her. That love is enough for Val to say good-bye to the
house and the girls.
3.11 [42] Knots Landing: "POWER PLAY"

A man who has been buying cars from the dealership and converting them to
run on methanol asks Karen to back him financially in his expansion. When
she turns him down, Gary and Abby decide to back him themselves. Gary
blindly pursues the deal and goes to Mexico with Abby, which makes Val very
insecure about their marriage. Abby uses the deal as a way to spend more
time with Gary. While in Mexico, Abby gets Gary so excited about the deal
they start kissing in a barn. Richard warns Gary about getting involved
with Abby and what it could do to his marriage. Meanwhile, Lilimae sweet
talks her way into being a backup singer to one of the artists Kenny is
producing.
3.12 [43] Knots Landing: "POSSIBILITIES"

Kenny asks Ginger to sing a demo when the regular singer becomes ill.
Another producer notices Ginger and asks her to work with him. However,
Kenny is opposed to the idea, believing she should stay home with the baby.
Ginger maintains she needs a work life of her own and will not let Kenny
stand in her way. She promises the baby will be taken care of and nothing
in their life will change, but Kenny is still not thrilled by the idea.
Meanwhile, Karen gets set up with one of Richard's friends. Later, she
realizes he is not the type of family man for her and the kids, and they
decide to part as friends.
3.13 [44] Knots Landing: "REUNION"

visit. She offers Karen a job in New York which thrills Diana, especially
when Victoria offers to take her to Paris and teach her how to be a
designer. Karen wrestles with the idea of selling the dealership and moving
to New York. She realizes the great life she and the kids have right now.
Karen decides it would be impossible to leave and work for her friend.
Meanwhile, Laura tells Scooter that she is ready to leave Richard, however,
later finds out she's pregnant.
3.14 [45] Knots Landing: "CRICKET"

Val's old boyfriend Rusty, dumps off his troublemaking stepdaughter,
Cricket, at Val and Gary's. Val begs Gary that he not call juvenile hall,
even though Cricket stirs up trouble throughout the neighborhood. Finally,
Val is forced to take her to juvenile hall. Cricket begs Val not to leave
her there. Gary finally hunts down Rusty, who reveals to Val he only left
Cricket because she could give her a better home. Val convinces Rusty that
Cricket loves and only wants to be with him. Later, Rusty returns and
claims his stepdaughter. Meanwhile, Karen's brother Joe comes to take a
visiting professor position and help with the kids.
3.15 [46] Knots Landing: "BEST INTENTIONS"

Laura tells Richard she's pregnant, which makes him want to work on their
marriage. Laura decides to have the baby, but tells Richard she just
doesn't love him anymore. Richard comes home one night to an empty house
and a good-bye note. Meanwhile, Val finishes her writing assignment which
has turned into a book. Unable to stop her curiosity, Lilimae secretly
reads the manuscript which turns out to be a thinly disguised novel about
the Ewings and their dirty deals. Abby walks in on the reading and
convinces Lilimae the novel should be shown to someone in publishing. Abby
also figures Gary will not be pleased, which would hurt he and Val's
marriage. Abby shows the manuscript to Joe, who says it has potential.
Lilimae and Abby tell Val the truth, and although upset they read it
without her knowing, she agrees to send it to the publisher.
3.16 [47] Knots Landing: "SILVER SHADOWS"

Silent film director Andrew Douglas claims Abby bears a close resemblance
to a deceased film star and companion. After spending some time together,
Abby realizes Andrew is dying and losing his memory. Although she feels
sorry for him, she hopes he might leave her some money which would help the
methanol business. Andrew's servant feels Abby is trying to take away the
inheritance that rightfully belongs to him. Later, Andrew dies with Abby at
his side, however, leaves the estate to his servant. In addition to losing
the estate, Abby also loses another man, Larry, who shifts his interest
toward Karen.
3.17 [48] Knots Landing: "LETTING GO"

Larry asks Karen to go away with him for the weekend. Karen is not sure if
she's ready to take that step. Joe tells Karen technically she is not Sid
Fairgate's wife anymore and that it is time to move on with her life. After
viewing some home movies and a visit to the cemetery, Karen takes off her
wedding ring and lets go of the fantasy that Sid is coming back. Joe's
girlfriend Lorainne visits to tell him she is ready to start their family.
Joe knows she is truthfully not ready and maintains he can't start a family
until she is prepared to make the commitment. Meanwhile, Abby, Gary, and
Val go to Sacramento to ask their local senator to bring a bill to the
floor that will allow methanol across the U.S. border from Mexico. He
claims there are more pressing issues even though Gary explains they will
lose everything if the bill is not passed. Abby stays behind and
"convinces" the senator to bring the bill to the floor for passage.
3.18 [49] Knots Landing: "EXPOSE"

Joe informs Val the publishers want her book and the contracts are on the
way. Val insists to Gary that he read the book before she sign anything.
Gary reads the book and tells Val she can't publish it because the exposure
would hurt his family. Val agrees not to publish the book if Gary cuts back
on the constant business meetings with Abby. Gary agrees, but Abby
conveniently sets up a night meeting that Gary can't afford to miss. Val
realizes how little their marriage means to Gary so she signs the
contracts. Meanwhile, Richard's life totally falls apart when he reveals
the firm's illegal pimping activities to a call girl. First she tapes the
conversation, then reveals the rest on a TV show. The embarrassing exposure
gives the firm an excuse to force Richard's resignation.
3.19 [50] Knots Landing: "NIGHT"

Richard coaxes Laura and Jason to the house and showers them with
extravagant gifts. Laura insists the marriage is over and tries to leave.
Richard threatens to hurt Laura if she tries to leave. The neighbors
overhear the fighting and rush over to help, but Richard tells them to stay
away. Gary gets into the house to talk, but Richard pulls a gun out and
tells Gary to leave. Gary calls the police and an all night stand off
ensues. A SWAT team is called to get Jason and Laura out of the house. They
manage to rescue Jason, which enrages Richard even more. Karen calls
Richard on the phone and tries to talk him through the crisis. Richard
cries that his whole world has fallen apart and he can't take it anymore.
He finally goes over the edge and walks out of the house with a gun pointed
at his head. He pulls the trigger but the gun ends up being unloaded.
Richard slumps down in tears and is later taken to the hospital.
3.20 [51] Knots Landing: "ACTS OF LOVE"

Another methanol meeting with Abby leads to a big argument between Gary and
Val. Val takes Olivia for a drive to cool off. Abby and Gary make the
methanol deal and celebrate by taking a walk on the beach, which results in
a passionate kiss. Meanwhile, Val and Olivia get stranded with no money at
a diner. The diner's owner Willie, lets them stay the night at his place.
After talking with Willie about his business, Val realizes how selfish she
has been regarding Gary's methanol venture. After realizing Val and Olivia
are gone till morning, Gary and Abby's passions for each other surface,
which leads to a night together in bed. Lilimae notices Gary's car at
Abby's around 3am and is very suspicious of their activities. Karen
convinces Laura to visit Richard in the hospital.
3.21 [52] Knots Landing: "CHINA DOLLS"

Gary and Abby's affair grows more intense, which makes it harder and harder
for them to be discreet. Gary's guilt also intensifies, which leads him to
break off the affair. However, his desire to live on the edge and major
attraction to Abby causes the break up to be short lived. Gary's peculiar
behavior makes Val even more suspicious of her husband. Val tries to talk
to Gary about her book and his behavior, but he is not interested in
talking. Frustrated, Val asks Abby point blank if she is having an affair
with Gary. Abby gives no definitive answer, but assures Val she could have
Gary any time. Meanwhile, Laura visits Richard at the sanitarium and begins
to have second thoughts about their marriage. Richard's doctor tells Laura
not move back in with him out of guilt, but only if their marriage can be saved.
3.22 [53] Knots Landing: LIVING DANGEROUSLY

As rumors of Gary and Abby's affair spread throughout the cul-de-sac, Lilimae
pleads with Val to talk to her husband.
Val does not want to believe that it is really happening and tries to
concentrate on her novel revisions. Karen and
Lilimae's suspicions are confirmed when they notice Gary and Abby coming out of
an apartment building. Lilimae threatens
to expose Gary if he does not attend a cocktail party for Val. Gary reluctantly
agrees to go to the party, but on the
night of the party, he decides being with Abby is more exciting. Karen suspects
Gary is with Abby, so she goes to the
apartment to confront them. Gary opens the door and Karen tells him to leave. At
that moment, Val walks up to the door
and sees Gary and Abby together. Val rushes home and packs a suitcase. Gary
follows and begs Val not to leave, but she
goes to her car and drives away. Meanwhile, Richard comes home from the
sanitarium and seems better, but Laura is not
convinced. She finds a crumpled suicide note written by Richard in the trash,
which is enough to convince her to move
back in with him.
