The pilot episode begins with Bobby Ewing escorting reunited newlyweds Val and
Gary Ewing to their house in Knots Landing,
California. The episode also focuses on Sid's troubled teenaged daughter (from
his first marriage). Val, feeling a parental
connection to her, helps her patch things up with her father.

Gary's brother J.R. and his California based company, Petrolux, sets up to drill
for oil off the beaches of Knots Landing.
Karen leads the neighborhood in a protest against the drilling. J.R. counters by
trying to blackmail Gary by threatening
to tell Lucy about her parents remarriage. However, Gary blackmails J.R. with
files he steals from the Petrolux office.
J.R. is forced to change sites and for the first time, Gary beatshis brother at
his own game.

Karen, going through a pre-mid-life crisis, meets Diana's controversial teacher
who is being accused of unethical
teaching methods. Karen joins him and the other students in a defense against
the other parents. Karen also feels very
attracted to him and they come very close to having an affair. However, Karen
decides that nothing is more important than
her marriage and family.

Feeling lonely and unappreciated, Laura goes to a local bar looking for some
attention and gets picked up by a man who
ultimately rapes her. She hides the truth about the rape from Richard and the
police. Val remembers seeing Laura coming
home after the rape, but is reluctant to reveal Laura's secret. Val confronts
Laura and convinces her to tell the police
the truth. Laura decides not to tell Richard, which adds more turmoil to their
marriage.

Val's mother, country singer Lilimae Clements arrives in Knots Landing for a
visit. Val is not very happy to see her
because the visit triggers some unhappy memories. It is revealed that Lilimae
was somewhat responsible for Val losing her
baby Lucy to J.R. Val had always been very resentful of Lilimae putting a
singing career ahead of her own child. Val and
Lilimae finally make up and settle their differences, but only in time for Val
to watch her mother walk out of her life
again to continue pursuing her career.

Val brings Lucy to Knots Landing after she discovers that her parents are
remarried. Lucy does not feel very comfortable
living the suburban life and does not get along very well with her father. Gary
insists that they should live off of his
salary and not the Ewing money. Lucy decides to leave and asks Val to go with
her, who reluctantly says yes. Gary begs
Val not to leave him, but she feels Lucy needs her. Gary later apologizes for
all of the years he was not there for his
family. Lucy decides to stay for a week and see what happens.

A motorcycle gang terrorizes the cul-de-sac women and children at the beach.
When Karen threatens to press charges for
injuring Michael, the gang retaliates by vandalizing the homes in the
cul-de-sac. Karen decides to drop the charges, but
the gang kidnaps Diana and takes her to the beach. The men arrive and a fight
ensues. The police arrive and arrest the gang,
which returns peace to the neighborhood.

Sid's ex-wife comes to Knots Landing and stirs up trouble for Sid and Karen.
Feeling very lonely, she tries to seduce Sid.
When he resists, she sets her sights on Richard. When Laura goes out of town,
Richard and Susan have an affair. After she
leaves town Richard is asked about the time he spent with Susan and he continues
lying and deceiving by saying nothing
happened.

Some painful memories from Ginger's past are revived when she receives some
trinkets in the mail that remind her of someone
that got her pregnant in high school. She admits to Sid and Karen that she had
an abortion and had not seen the baby's
father since. Ginger visits the father's mother and discovers that she is the
one who had been sending the items because
of her resentment toward Ginger for having the abortion. Her son had since died
and she was trying to make Ginger feel the
same pain. She and Ginger talk about the past and she agrees to stop sending the
trinkets.

the rest of the family. She is unsure if

shortly after, has a miscarriage. Karen
and Sid mourn the loss, but are thankful for the great kids and wonderful life
they already have. Eric and Ginger's sister
Jill date for the weekend.

A bad investment gets Richard into some financial trouble. Instead of allowing
Laura to get a job to help them get out of
the debt, Richard asks the neighbors and then Laura's father for money. He
decides to loan Laura the money and she turns
it over to Richard with the stipulation that she work to pay it off. Richard
reluctantly puts his pride aside and agrees
to let Laura work. Diana's boyfriend steals some money from Sid then lies to
Diana about taking it. He finally confesses
to Sid, but all trust is lost between he and Diana.
1.12 [--] Knots Landing: "BOTTOM OF THE BOTTLE (Pt. 1)"

Gary gets a promotion to Vice President of Knots Landing Motors and at the
celebration party, starts drinking again.
After a fight with Val, Gary leaves in a rage and Val is forced to tell everyone
that her husband is an alcoholic. Gary
gets arrested after fighting in a bar and after being released, he promises not
to drink again, but at a business lunch
gives into pressure and takes another drink. He disappears for days and gets
mugged, then tries to steal from a liquor
store. Kenny and Ginger's marriage is in jeopardy when Ginger discovers Kenny
has been seeing singer Sylvie.
1.13 [--] Knots Landing: "BOTTOM OF THE BOTTLE (Pt. 2)"

Gary's binge continues and Val organizes a search party to find him. Richard
locates Gary at a bar, but gets drunk himself.
Gary tries to break into Laura and Richard's liquor cabinet, and when Val and
Laura try to stop him, he hits Val. He is
taken into detoxification and starts rehabilitation. Gary finally sobers up and
attends his first AA meeting. Kenny and
Ginger's problems get even worse when Ginger finds Sylvie and Kenny making out
in the studio. Ginger throws Kenny out of
the house, which pushes him right back to Sylvie.
