[Debut] This half-hour comedy series involves the zany crew of the destroyer
USS Appleby. Dean Jones stars as Ensign O'Toole, an expert on almost every
subject but a hard man to find when there's work to be done. Jack Mullaney is
featured regularly as Lt. (j.g.) Rex St. John; Jay C. Flipperton as Chief
Petty Officer Nelson; and Jack Albertson as Lt. Cdr. Virgil Stoner. Other

Synopsis:
The Appleby puts into the Japanese port of Kowana. The sailors are given

During maneuvers, the USS Appleby is to be the target of mock sabotage by a
crew member secretly assigned to "blow up" the ship. Comander Stoner brags

Commander Stoner fakes sabotage and makes the crew find out who the saboteur really is. [BI]

so they give up. Later they discover that the lady enters another contest

"I was the LTjg on board the USS Frank E Evans (DD754) which was
used at the "Applebee." We took the crew and production team to
sea for a day of shooting for the pilot. I went to the studio to
check the validity of what the set designers had put together....
very exact except for one porthole that went the wrong direction.
I would love to find the first program (or any). I was listed
as technical advisor on the trailer but I am sure that was cut
out for the actual viewing.
It was a fun show and should have lasted more than one season
...but I was a little biased."
