contest, but changes it to My Dad. Dobie unexpectedly wins the newspaper

fatalistically morose French girl who savors the negative things in life.
She thinks Dobie is an oaf, and Dobie hates her bleak attitude "like
poison" but she keeps coming around and Dobie can't understand
why. The answer will surprise you! [DF]

Dobie's mother introduces him to the daughter of a famous French painter
hoping that some culture rubs off on her son. [TA]

sudden the boys realize that they're being tossed out into the cold,
bleak world - and they're scared.

Dobie and Maynard have to write an essay titled "Whither Are We
Drifting" to graduate high school.
This excellent Shulman story actually can be traced way back to a
scene from Shulman's pre-Dobie novel, "Sleep Till Noon". [DF]
