Louis P. Cashman, publisher of a Vicksburg, Miss., newspaper was awarded

 the Pulitzer Prize for getting out his paper in the ruins of a tornado-stricken town.

The devastating tornado in December, 1953 bred panic until the factual reports

in the paper gave a true and less alarming account of the tragedy. [RF]

A title taken from the grave marker of Betsy Arley, wife of an early American colonist.

On October 11, 1619, Betsy arrived in Virginia with a group of women sent from London

 to become wives of colonists. Betsy, however, retained the privilege of returning to her

homeland. In order to protect her until the return of a ship in the spring, Richard Arley,

commander of the settlement married her in name only. [RF]

The commandant of a 17th century Canadian fort in Indian Territory jokingly leaves

 his teenage daughter in command when he travels to Montreal. The commandant

mistakenly believes the Iroquois have left the vicinity for the season. The daughter takes

her duties seriously, much to the resentment of the soldiers, when Indians stage an attack. [TA]
