Synopsis:
A B-47 once fell apart at 32,000 feet, and the men in it were moved to extraordinary action. [RF]
*Re-creation of the true story.

From TIME magazine article:
With admirable attention to the truth, the Goodyear Theater (NBC)

presented The Obenauf Story, the heroic accomplishment of Lieut. James Edward Obenauf,

who saved himself, a fellow officer and a $2,000,000 airplane when he landed a crippled

six-jet B-47 at Dyess Air Force Base near Abilene, Texas (TIME, May 12).

As Obie, the young father, Actor Kerwin Mathews was at first quietly convincing.

Later, when Obenauf found himself at 34,000 feet in command of a burning plane,

all the rest of the crew except a navigator bailed out—and the navigator dying

of hypoxia—Mathews was embarrassingly frightened. He was a phrenetic caricature

of the real-life lieutenant, the professional flyer who said when he got home,

"You're so numb, I don't think there's any fear at all. You're just numb."
But the slipstream knifing through the battered B-47 cockpit was bitterly convincing.

Obie's agony as he tried to open his eyes against the blinding force was

painfully evident. And if old airmen winced when the flight control officer

yammered and yelled into the tower microphone, broke in on the G.C.A. operator

in hammy confusion, the G.C.A. operator himself was superbly true to life. Calm,

careful, his every tone reassuring and reliable, he was just the man to bring a pilot home.

* The true Lieut. Obenauf was surely willing to overlook the utterly silly last lines

that the show put in his mouth: "Hey, I gotta pick up all that baby stuff from the Maxwells'."

In real life, temporarily blinded though he was, he had jumped from the plane

and run until someone tackled him. [TM]

Synopsis 1:

Eve Fremont picks up hoodlum Frank Piper. Then she accuses him of making advances. [JB]

Synopsis 2:

Jake Brittin (Kelley) is a San Francisco defense attorney opposed to the death penalty.

He agrees to defend Frank Piper, a defendant charged with murdering society

lady Eve Fremont's husband. Piper's story is that she had been carrying on a

relationship with him, and after a quarrel she promised to "fix him good." Later

she invited him to her place, and when he came in, she screamed. Her angry

husband came at him, he fired a warning shot into the floor, the husband kept

coming, and Piper fired three more shots into the husband before he finally was

able to run away. The warning shot would make it manslaughter, not murder.

At the trial, Eve's story is that Piper had been stalking her, broke into her house

and murdered her husband. She testifies that only three shots were fired. Quincy

confirms that no fourth bullet was found. Jake obtains a recess, giving him time to

sneak over to the crime scene. By re-enacting the shooting he discovers that there

was indeed a fourth bullet, which has been deliberately hidden. He gets Quincy to

come over and discover the bullet himself by making snide comments about him

withholding evidence. There's a final court scene of Jake wrapping up his argument,

waxing eloquent about reasonable doubt... especially reasonable doubt about an

upper class woman flirting with a working class man. The jury return a verdict of

manslaughter. At this point there's an odd little bit that makes Jake a rather less

likeable character -- he refuses to shake his client's hand, giving him a disgusted look,

and goes off to chum it up with the prosecutor. [RF]

*Note: This was the pilot episode of an unsold series written by Gene Roddenberry.

It was based on the book Never Plead Guilty by San Francisco criminal lawyer Jake Ehrlich.

The series Sam Benedict, based on Ehrlich, was eventually produced and aired for one year, 1962-63.
