Brief Synopsis:
Matthew Cordell (Redford), an embittered ex-con, is paroled into the Judge's
custody. At Shiloh, unable to cope with freedom, he refuses the Virginian's
and Steve's repeated invitations of friendship. Although he begins to
respond to Betsy's love for him, he's driven to attempt murder over a minor
disagreement with another ranch hand.
