Synopsis 4 (Newspaper Article):
"INS Writer Jack Lotto's Black Dahlia Case Solution to Appear on 'Big Story' Dec. 17"
For their weekly salute to enterprising reporters, the producers of “Big Story” selected Jack Lotto's handling of the "Black Dahlia" case of several years ago.
Tawdry Elizabeth Short, who was called the Black Dahlia because of her jet black hair, had many men friends who might have killed her. But the one who wanted to be sure he wasn't overlooked was a soldier, who signed a 57-page confession at Fort Dix, N.J. He was said to be the last man believed to have dated the California girl.
The soldier, whose name Jack forgets, arrived at Fort Dix with a bloody handkerchief in his pocket and a picture of the girl whose face by that time was nationally known. The blood on the handkerchief matched the victim's blood type. In his confession, the soldier told how he was prone to grow violent when drunk, and remembered having beaten her up while drunk on a previous date. He recalled, too, being drunk on the murder night and calling her names.
The man had a phenomenal memory for dates, places and exact times where he had been years before. But in reading over the confession, Lotto noticed the qualifying word "or" when he referred to the time he was supposed to have been with the girl. Puzzled by the man's uncertainty over the time of an event only two weeks old, whereas he was positive of other dates and times of months and years before, Lotto began to check.
Here's what he found: The soldier arrived at Fort Dix about the time the "Black Dahlia" was being murdered in California. Military police, sure they had the murderer, pushed Lotto around. The reporter climbed in a back window of the MP headquarters to interview the soldier while a guard stood outside.
"Nobody wanted to help him be cause he was such a stinker," Lotto recalls. "But I finally got together enough statements to clear him. The guy was given a medical discharge as a psycho. And, funny thing, he never even thanked me.”
[23Nov54 International News Service report][TA]
Note:
The above article and newspaper listings avoid mentioning the name of the accused. But according to a 9Feb1947 AP news report, Cpl. Joseph Dumais was the man who signed the 50-page confession.

Have you any comments, corrections, episode titles, air dates, production numbers, directors, writers, story/synopsis, guest stars, cast lists, etc?
Have you any old videos, or tv guides? Dust them off and let us know if you have any information on this series or any other tv series from the
Golden Age of TV, which is missing from any episode guides on the web. Perhaps a certain episode of a particular series coincided with a key
moment in your life, or in world events - and or has left a vivid memory of when it was shown. Let us know. Would you like to see any other
tv series guides on this site? If so please e-mail The Classic TV Archive - see Feedback below.
