Skelton Faces Hernia Surgery
HOLLYWOOD (UPI)Comedian Red Skelton will undergo surgery Monday for repair of a
diaphragmatic
hernia, Cedars of Lebanon Hospital announced Friday.
Skelton entered the hospital last Saturday for a rest and checkup and
examination disclosed the hernia
in the partition between the chest and the abdomen, the hospital said.
Skelton's regular Tuesday night television shows on the Columbia Broadcasting
System have been pre-taped.
No show was scheduled for Dec. 27 when an hour-and-a half spectacular fills the
time slot.
CBS said there will be a re-run Dec. 20 of a traditional Skelton Christmas
presentation called
"The Cop and the Anthem," based on an O' Henry story. This story of a tramp's
attempt to spend the Christmas
season in the warmth of a jail has been presented twice in past four Christmas
seasons of the Skelton show.
Red Skelton had hernia surgery on (or around) Dec. 12, 1960.
(The Racine Show and San Fernandocal were taped in advance.)
Red didn't return with new episodes until mid-March 1961.

[--] Racine (Wisconsin) Journal Times Bulletin, Sunday,
November 6, 1960
article:
Skelton Sells Laughter from Racine
By George H. Miller,
Journal-Times Staff
Television's "laughter salesman" and an entourage of 50 descended upon S. C.
Johnson & Son Inc.
Friday morning, creating havoc in the plant and office. Red Skelton, his guest
star, Sir Cedric Hardwicke
and the supporting cast began a 3 1/2 day task of assembling Skelton's Dec. 27,
1960, television show
for Johnson's in bits and pieces. Commercials, music and editing will be
completed later. Normally a
$150,000 production for the half hour show, a Skelton representative said the
Racine show would cost
"a few thousand more in transportation costs."
75th Anniversary
The Racine show is written for Johnson's 75th anniversary. It Involves a letter
of congratulations from
Skelton and a request that the company hire Clem Kadiddlehopper. Clem gets his
job from J. B. Williams,
a vice president, played by Hardwicke. Of course he botches every effort
clowning his way through the
offices, factory and cafeteria. Friday morning three bus size trucks parked at
the Franklin St. entrance
to the company offices. Out poured three 140-pound television cameras,
microphones, thousands of feet
of cable and other equipment.
At least one company executive watched as his office was usurped as a dressing
room. To add to the
confusion Republican politicians appeared smiling and shaking hands. Fifty
regional sales managers
trouped in later in the day. Employee and television crew members spent the
morning dodging a dozen
or more press photographers and reporters, while everyone in the building played
hop-scotch with
electronic cable strewn in the hallways.
Countless Stories
During rehearsals Skelton chatted amiably with company officials, gagged with
office girls and
entertained Hardwicke with countless stories. With a smile and good word for
everyone he was
a 100 percent laughter salesman.
