From the ship, Independence, in Brooklyn, Prof. Donald Gilley, Joseph M. McCuen,
MCU, and Comdr. Aubrey D. Engle dashed
across Manhattan to join Lt. Bruce D. McCurdy and the Naval Academy Glee Club at
the rehearsal studio of the Pat Boone Show.
Here is where the midshipmen spent many hours of rehearsal time to produce the
show that finally went on the air in the
evening. The midshipmen were much impressed with the entire attitude of everyone
who was on the show or who had anything to
do with the show. This was a program with many fine talents, from the
secretaries, directors, agency people, cameramen to
the gentleman himself, Pat Boone. There wasn't any doubt that the midshipmen
worked very hard, made an outstanding impression
on the people they worked with, and had a wonderful time. The Glee Club
president Midshipman 1-C David H. Stitzel II, of
Springborough, Ohio, was the midshipman in charge of the group. He soloed in the
song "Nothing Like a Dame" as did Midshipman
Charles "Buck" H. Lloyd, 2-C of Indianapolis, Indiana. The other four numbers
sung on this delightful program that featured
the midshipmen were in the opening song, "Anchors Aweigh", "Salvo Song", "As the
Girls Go" with both Alfred Drake and
