1.1 [--] Beulah: BEULAH'S SOUTHERN COOKING (premiere episode)
03-Oct-1950 ABC Tue
Starring: Ethel Waters (as Beulah #1)
Synopsis:
Beulah hires a handsome butler to make Bill jealous. [JB]
Review:
--Excerpt from 4-Oct-1950 New York Times review:
The first story told of Beulah making the arrangements for a dinner
which Mr. Harry was to give for an important business acquaintance.
This led to complications with her boy friend, Bill, who ultimately
became jealous, etc., etc. But just as the business acquaintance is
ready to leave in a fit of anger, he smells one of Beulah's Mississippi
dinners and there is a hapy ending. The dialogue, however, was hardly
original. There were the calculated mistakes in grammar most commongly
identified with minstrel shows, the implication that some of the
characters seldom thought of anything but the opposite sex and the
studied condescension of Mr. Harry and his wife to the foibles of the
kitchen staff. To that extent the program was not very modern. [TA]
