Synopsis:
The story concerns a love-sick youth Whose three-day serenade drives the residents of a fishing village in Sicily to
distraction. An unusual feature of the production is that while the 'lovelorn youth is constantly present in the minds of
others, he will not be seen at any time. He will be heard only, singing "Bella Mari," a ballad in barcarole form (and the
musical motif to the play) with accordion accompaniment. The stricken young man also keeps the village men on shore because
in his condition he is unable to make use of his gift as a finder of schools of fishes for the local fleet. Only the
marriage to Maria will restore normalcy, but her father is an obstacle to that. [RF]
