Synopsis:
The story of the bitter rivalry and personal animosity between Alexander

 Hamilton and Aaron Burr. The conflict between the two men led eventually to

the now famous duel at Weehawken, N.J. when Hamilton was mortally wounded.

The play begins on the dueling field, then flashes back to a period some years earlier.

Aaron Burr has been elected U.S. Senator from New York, having defeated Philip Schuyler,

Hamilton's father-in-law, and Burr envisions a brilliant political career for himself. Hamilton

considers Burr an unprincipled opportunist, and determines to halt his political career.

Burr then goes after the nomination for governor of the state of New York, and has a

good chance of succeeding until Hamilton, in a desperate last-minute maneuver, swings

 the nomination to John Jay. Burr withdraws from the race because of Jay's popularity, but

Hamilton's move is the first step toward a permanent feud between himself and Burr. [RF]

On a foggy night in the Atlantic Ocean, two passenger ships collide. In the rescue, one life is lost.

During the Coast Guard investigation which follows, it turns out that Captain Sorrenson of the

S.S. Wingate served under Captain Trawley of the S.S. Red Star for many years. There also

appears to be some personal conflict between the two men. [RF]
