Synopsis:
A hard-hitting police lieutenant who justifies his unusual tactics by preventing
the lynching of an innocent man who was sent to jail for a year because he
had broken into an apartment and arrest a gangster without a search warrant.
Mike asks no quarter but is segregated from the other prisoners by the ineffectual
sheriff. Shortly after his imprisonment an old lady, greatly loved by the community,
is murdered and the town half-wit is arrested for the crime on circumstantial evidence.
Mike shows the sheriff that the prisoner is innocent but a lynch mob which has
formed accepts no reasoning. This drastic situation gives the imprisoned officer
a chance to prove his philosophy of "Walk softly and
carry a big stick". [RF]
