A look at how the theories of Sigmund Freud about the subconscious, which gained wider acceptance in
the 1940s and 1950s through the work of Freud's daughter, Anna, and his nephew, Edward Bernays,
were used by big business and various agencies, including the CIA, in the US to try and develop
mind-control techniques in order to influence the thoughts of the American people. Those in power
believed that the only way to make democracy work and thereby create a stable society was to repress
the savage barbarism that lurked beneath the surface of the normal member of society.

Looks at a radical group of psychotherapists in the US in the 1960s who challenged the predominance
of Freudian theory, and were inspired by Wilhlem Reich, a former pupil of Freud. Reich believed that
the inner self should be encouraged to express itself and did not need to be controlled and repressed.
This move towards individualism was soon seized upon by American corporations, keen to sell people
ways of expressing their new individuality.
