Premise:
Matt and Jenny Tanner, two street-wise English children, are en route to
the New World on board a ship with their mother. During the voyage, the
mother dies in a shipboard typhoid epidemic, leaving the brother and
sister orphans. When the vessel reaches Halifax, the Tanners jump ship
and set out to find their relatives who had arrived earlier. On the way,
the youngsters meet a mysterious gentleman named Adam Cardston and a
woodsman named Kit who join the Tanners on the trail west.

Background:
Besides being shown in Canada, "Matt and Jenny" was sold to Italy, France
and West Germany. With the exception of some U. S. guest stars and the
occasional ani-mal (such as a wolf and bear from Hollywood and an
elephant from Ohio) the series was 100-percent Canadian.

Synopsis:
On board a storm-tossed ship bound for Canada, young Matt Tanner and his
sister Jenny are summoned by the captain with sad news - their mother
has died of the fever. Not wanting to be sent back to England - or to
a home in Montreal - the Tanners sneak off the ship when it docks in
Halifax. On shore the orphans meet up with Adam Cardston, a passenger
on the ship who had tried to help their mother. Cardston takes the
children with him to locate their aunt and uncle who have a farm in
the Annapolis Valley. After an adventurous stage trip, and a fortuitous
meeting with a woodsman named Kit, they reach the Tanner farm. But it
is deserted - Matt and Jenny's relatives have gone West. Adam and Kit
are also heading West, however, and they take the two youngsters with them. [BH]

Synopsis:
Adam, Kit and the Tanner children are eating breakfast when an ominous
rumble rolls across the sky. Kit tells them that the Indians believe
that thunder and lightning birds flying high above the mountains are
responsible for such storms. Elsewhere in the forest, a bolt of
lightning strikes a tree and - as it falls - ignites the other trees.
Later, as Kit, Adam and the children paddle down river, they come
across two loggers - one a black man named Washington carrying an
injured companion away from the forest fire. Washington in-forms them
that a family of homesteaders named Tanner have moved into a nearby
abandoned farm. Kit and Washington head through the fire toward the
farm - hoping the family is Matt and Jenny’s relatives. Meanwhile,
Adam, Matt and Jenny endure a harrowing canoe ride dow the river
with the injured logger. [BH]

Synopsis:
Matt and Jenny are surprised to see a one-wagon circus caravan traveling
through the wilderness. Suddenly, an explosion near the trail frightens
the horses into a gallop. Bellini, the driver, finally manages to bring
the team under control but not before a wagon wheel is damaged. As
Bellini and his troupe repair the wheel, an Indian member of the caravan
discovers the children watching them and bring them into the camp.
The Tanners are given a ride to the next settlement by the Bellinis
- and during the journey they learn that Bellini and his family are
fleeing a charge of theft from the circus they worked for in Montreal.
As the caravan proceeds, Matt notices a mysterious man on horseback
following the wagon. [BH]

Synopsis:
Kit, Matt and Jenny are paddling downstream when they come across an
Indian boy spear-fishing in the river. They stop to talk to him, but
several braves appear and their chief, Takomis, the boy's father,
orders them out of the region. Kit notices that the boy's eyes are
blue and he feels sure that he is a white lad. After questioning
Takorais, Kit learns that the boy was found in the forest 15 years
ago - all alone. Cokah, the boy, shows Kit a child's Bible with the
names of a man and woman inscribed inside. Disobeying his father's
orders, Cokah heads toward the farm of the couple named in the Bible
where he must face his destiny - to return to his white parents or
live his life as an Indian. [BH]

Synopsis:
With Cardston's help, Matt and Jenny hope to find their lost relatives
at a mysterious religious community. Upon arrival, during a violent
storm, they find the community deserted and all the doors locked.
Seeking shelter from the storm, Cardston and the Tanner children
force their way into the church where they find evidence that Matt
and Jenny's aunt and uncle had been there. Meanwhile, Cardston
catches sight of a shadowy figure in the trees and the children are
convinced that something dreadful has happened to their relatives. [BH]

Synopsis:
A troop of Recoats - in search of a traitor - stop and question Matt,
Jenny and Adam on the trail. When the soldiers leave, they notice a
young woman plowing a nearby field. Adam offers to help with the work,
but she refuses. Just as they are about to leave, however, the woman
collapses and, after taking her back to her farmhouse, Adam discovers
that she is soon to have a baby. They also learn that the woman's
husband is the deserter that the Recoats are seeking. [BH]

Synopsis:
A young woman named Samantha Shelborne rides into town looking for a
man to guide her into a wilderness area called Devil's Gorge. When
Kit refuses to lead her into such a dangerous region, she hires a
guide named Whiskey Jim, who deserts her in the gorge. Seeing Jim
back in town so soon, Kit questions him and learns that Samantha
has gone into the wilderness to search for her husband who disappeared
there with another man a year and a half before. Kit forces Jim to
show him where he left the woman, then he sets out alone to locate her.
Meanwhile, down in the gorge, Samantha makes camp, unaware that she
is being watched by a strangely - masked figure with a golden eagle

work in the camp cookhouse. The captain's great ambition, however,

Synopsis:
Adam, Matt and Jenny stop at a small town and inquire at the schoolhouse
for information concerning the children's aunt and uncle. Adam is
captivated by the lovely teacher Angela Masters and he enrolls the
children in school - much to Matt's displeasure. He'd rather learn
the ways of the wild from Kit. The teacher, however, in her zealous
desire to shape the children's future, obtains a court order to give
her custody of Matt and Jenny, but Adam feels that they should have
the freedom to choose their own destiny. [BH]

Synopsis:
Peddler Barnabas Bletcher travels around the frontier selling "miracle"
tonic and giving away free maps to the recently - discovered riches of
California. To further attract a crowd, Bletcher also has a wrestling
bear which he pits against all comers for a $50 fee. The Tanner
children are among the people gathered around Bletcher's wagon and
Matt decides the map may be helpful in locating their relatives, but
he has no money to buy a bottle of tonic. He tries to persuade Kit
to wrestle the bear and win the $50, but Kit refuses. Meanwhile,
Clayton Ellison sends in his henchman to wrestle the bear, but the
man loses and Ellison loses his money. To gain revenge on Bletcher,
Ellison entices him into a poker game and while they are playing orders
two of his men to wreck Bletcher's wagon and kill his bear. [BH]

Synopsis:
Despite warnings that the area is menaced by wolves, Matt, Jenny and Kit
travel to a remote campsite in search of the children's relatives. They
discover only a woman and her children at the camp and she tells Kit that
everyone else has been scared off by the wolves, but that her husband -
who is out hunting - will not leave until all the wolves are killed.
Kit is skeptical about the story and when Crawford returns he tells a
strange story about seeing a half-man, half-wolf creature in the woods. [BH]

Synopsis:
The sound of drums lure Adam, Kit and the Tanners to the site of a sacred
Indian healing ceremony. They watch from the bushes as a shaman chants
over an apparently sick boy. Back at camp, Adam - a student of medicine
among other things - professes an interest in helping the Indian boy.
Kit enters the village to investigate. Adam becomes impatient, however,
and heads for the Indian camp with Matt and Jenny. They are soon
apprehended by two braves and taken to the village. The shaman is not
happy to see so many whites - especially when a curse hangs over his
people. [BH]

Synopsis:
In the forest, Kit and Matt meet Oquaga and his son, and the old
Indian demonstrates a magical bow, passed down through generations
by his people. Oquaga tells them that his grandson, Tioga, is on a
journey into the "Big Empty" to test his manhood. The "Big Empty"
Oquaga warns is the home of Skiba, a spirit bear that no man can kill.
As the adults talk, Matt practices with the bow, wandering further
and further into the woods - the domain of Skiba. [BH]

Synopsis:
Part 1 - Book publisher and promoter Harry Alfred Teasdale hires Kit
to guide him to the wilderness cabin of writer L. M. Galloway. The
next morning, at the appointed time, Kit arrives to meet Teasdale only
to discover that he had left some hours earlier. Later, when Adam
learns that Teasdale - a man he knows from past experience as a shady
character - is in the area, he and Jenny ride out to warn Galloway to
beware of him. When they arrive, however, they find that Teasdale has
already been there and gone - with Galloway's manuscript. [BH]
Synopsis:
Part 2 - Teasdale runs into the backwoods Grogan brothers, who take his
fine clothes and proceed to burn everything they find in his bags.
As the Grogans’ ponder Harry's fate, he gets the bright idea of writing
the brothers memoirs and they turn him loose to draw up a contract.
The wily Harry sneaks off when he gets the chance. Meanwhile, Kit and
Matt arrive at Galloway's cabin and when they learn what has happened,
set out after Adam, who has gone after Harry. Adam comes across Teasdale
and brings him back to the writer's cabin, followed by the Grogans.
After Adam and Galloway confer with the Grogans, they make an
arrangement satisfactory to all. [BH]

Synopsis:
A startling newspaper story brings Adam Cardston to Fort Abernackie
where he finds his woodsman friend Kit behind bars - charged with the
murder of one of the settlements leading citizens. Despite Constable
Pennington’s objections, Adam demands to see Kit before “hanging judge”
Willoughby arrives for the trial. Meanwhile, Matt and Jenny - also on
their way to help Kit - are picked up on the trail by none other than
the judge. [BH]

actress who had earlier introduced Adam to the acting world.
Matt is infatuated with the lovely actress, and when she asks
him and Cardston to appear with her in her next New York play,
they both decide to accept. Adelaide's manager does take kindly
to another man in her life, however, and he hires two ruffians
to discourage Adam from becoming a leading man again. [BH]

Two Scottish families - the Campbells and the Lamonts - bring
their feud to the New World. Hugh Campbell’s son wants to marry
Lamont’s daughter but their union threatens to renew hostilities
between the two families. Adam and Jenny are drawn into the
conflict when Campbell gives them a ride and a meal. [BH]

Synopsis:
On the trail, Kit and Matt encounter Jake Winfield and his daughter
Ann repairing a broken wheel on their wagon. The Winfields inform
them that they’ve been left behind by the main wagon train because
they couldn’t keep up. Matt also discovers that his aunt and uncle
are also with the train. After repairs are completed, Kit and Matt
accompany the Winfields on their journey west. Jake Winfield tells
a tale of a misfortune and accident-plagued journey - and he blames
wagon master Aaron Thorpe for their troubles - and Jake is determined
to kill Thorpe when they catch up to the train. [BH]

Synopsis:
Matt and Jenny are exploring Pocomoonshine Swamp when a wild cry sends
them scurrying back toward their camp. In their haste, they both fall
and Jenny scrapes her arm. As they get up, they are startled to find
an Indian standing over them. He tends to Jenny's injured arm and tells
them a strange story about an Indian named Jean Big Canoe, who was
murdered many years before, and whose ghostly cry can still be heard
echoing through the swamp. [BH]
