Background:
David Moore from "Dinosaur TV Web Site"
<http://www.78rpm.co.uk/tv.htm>
"The filming of the stories of Cobb and Co was given authenticity by
location shooting on the spot in Central Australia, and by the building
of a satellite town in French's Forest Sydney." So says ATV's blurb,
but nothing can disguise the fact that this is a very dull series.
The producer Ben Fox only took charge of this project in early 1960.
The first producer had been Maury Geraghty, and Jennifer Jayne
had
come from England to be the "female lead", with her husband Peter Mullen
as the art director. However only four films were completed by the end
of 1959, so ATV hit man Leslie Harris flew down under because of
"concern over progress." Next month Val Parnell and Lew Grade were
reported in the Sydney press to be "furious" over allegations that
the series was to be abandoned. Production had been "postponed for
four weeks," they explained "chiefly on account of bad weather."
Possibly! But reading between the lines, my guess is there were a
few sackings! Shooting restarted in March. Does the lack of prominence
accorded to Jennifer Jayne, and the fact that only 34 films were finally
completed by mid 1960 suggest that the first four "pilots" were never
aired?
Leslie Harris felt moved to write to the editor of "Television Today"
after the first episode had been transmitted. Under the headline
"Anxiety over Whiplash", he pleaded: " I was very pleased your critic
liked Whiplash. The first effort in Australia has been a real problem
child. Some of the later shows have some marvellous aboriginal footage
shot at Alice Springs, where for the first time the aborigines actually"
acted in a tv film
