Tony Randall introduces this drama, set in a high-tech future society that does not allow books. Those found possessing them are
exterminated by teams of "bookmen," who then cart the confiscated reading matter off to the "library" for disposal. Bookman
Gordon Miller finds himself attracted to the new librarian, a young woman named Susan. When Gordon discovers Susan hiding a book
in her clothes, he is at once appalled by this act of treason and strangely curious about her. Although she is a Reader, the two
soon become involved in a passionate relationship which challenges all of Gordon's preconceptions about the society in which they
live. Gordon begins to read voraciously, and the two decide to get married. Susan introduces Gordon to a whole underground of Readers;
and he finds it impossible to continue on his extermination missions. Gordon's roommate, also a bookman, grows suspicious. Fearing
for his safety, Gordon finds himself in conflict over his hatred for the repressive society he used to protect, his love for Susan,
and his growing ambivalence about the liberal Readers, who can be ruthless and repressive in their own right.

*Note:
From TIME magazine 17Feb58.
As the marquise, porcelain-cheeked Dana Wynter, whose "lovely hands drooped

down like lilies on either side," coped with blackmail and adultery with equally

exquisite calm. Far flashier was Director John Frankenheimer, whose busy directorial conceits,

trick angles, mirror shots, closeups to the pore, camera peeps through iron grilles,

 even the little photographer's aperture; often upstaged the work itself while accenting

 its hollow passion. Sometimes the tricks of the director, working in tandem with the

 star-crossed lovers and their rococo surroundings, were more attention-catching than the story.
