[01] Walk on By: FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
17Mar01, BBC2 Sat
"if you see me walking down the street, and I start to cry,
each time we meet ..." Hal David's classic lyric for "Walk On
By" provides the title for this history of modern song writing.
The tune begins over a century ago as emigré Jews from Eastern
Europe mix cultures with black slaves in America, igniting the
spark of musical revolution that made the world go pop.
[02] Walk on By: STARDUST
24Mar01, BBC2 Sat
Jazz Divas Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald, smooth crooner
Bing Crosby and 'Ol Blue Eyes Frank Sinatra take their tune in the
spotlight with immortal Louis Armstrong, as the jazz age comes
under scrutiny.
[03] Walk on By: THE ROAD TO ROCK 'N' ROLL

it all together and whaddya got? Rock 'n' Roll.
[04] Walk on By: PRODUCER POP
7Apr01, BBC2 Sat
The series reaches the post-war years and the rise to power of the
record producer. It was an era when it was the song not the singer
which made a hit, giving studio knob-twiddlers like Phil Spector
free rein. Burt Bacharach, Neil Sedaka, and Carole King share their
memories.
[05] Walk on By: ATLANTIC CROSSING
14Apr01 BBC2 Sat
The series reaches the Sixties, a golden age which saw the Beatles,
and Stones lead an invasion of the US, who fought back with the
Beach Boys, Motown and Burt Bacharach. Music fans never had it so
good.
[06] Walk on By: AFTER THE GOLD RUSH
21Apr01 BBC2 Sat
If you dreamed you saw the silver spaceships flying in the yellow
haze of the sun, then you will mellow out to this strum back to
the Seventies golden age of singer-songwriters Neil Young, Joni
Mitchell, James Taylor, Melanie and more, an acoustic era when
patchouli ruled the airwaves and the bedsit was the centre of the
universe.
[07] Walk on By: SOUNDTRACK
28Apr01 BBC2 Sat
Some of the greatest songs ever written began life in top musicals.
Featuring Stephen Sondheim, Tim Rice, and Robin Gibb
[08] Walk on By: PURE POP (last in series)
5May01 BBC2 Sat
The series comes up to date with Hear'Say, the latest in a long
production line of perfectly formed pop performers whose success
depends on the skills of the professional songwriter. Madonna,
Neil Tennant and Abba's Björn ponder the secrets of hit making.
