Note: This season finale was almost the show's last episode altogether: During the 1966-67 season, "Gunsmoke" fell
so far behind in the ratings that CBS decided to cancel it. However, then-CBS president William Paley made the network
reverse that decision. Beginning in the Fall 1967 season, the show was moved to Monday nights, where it returned to the
Top Ten in the Nielsen ratings.
