Series regular characters appearing in this episode:  Featuring Trampas with
a brief appearance by the Virginian

Short Synopsis:
"Is this what it comes down to?  Gold, glory--whatever it is you're all looking for?"
After a horse drive to Pueblo, Colorado, Trampas goes to a nearby town to
visit his old "trailing" buddy Bill Doolie and arrives just in time for the
man's funeral.  The cowboy has no reason to stick around St. John until he
hears conflicting accounts about Bill's death.  Wanting to know the truth
Trampas decides to "stir things up." Since cattle rustlers have been
operating in the area Trampas wonders if his pal might have been killed
because he was mixed up in something illegal.  While pressing the issue with
a very "nervous" Sheriff Lundee (Evers) Trampas' investigations lead to real
trouble with former gunfighter Deputy Murrel (Anderson) and his
trigger-happy protégé Griff (Boone). Although Trampas had "come to town to
see a friend and ended up losing him" he is reminded that he's gained a few
new ones:  Bill's sister Margaret Lundee (Arthur), who wondered if any of
Trampas' traits had rubbed off on her brother during the three years they
were on the trail together; Chico (Miranda), a young boy who had worked for
Bill and, along with talk about their mutual friend, had shared his "chicken
supremo with the cowboy; Dolores (Werle), a saloon girl who knew all about
the town; and Ben Fancher (Chiles), the wealthy businessman and cattle buyer
who had previously shut his eyes to the rustling.

Discontinuity error in film editing (use of stock footage):  In the opening
horse drive sequence Trampas was riding a buckskin horse he used during
seasons 1-3 (some of the footage was possibly shot around the time of 1.08
"Impasse"). When they arrived in Pueblo he was on the buckskin he used
during seasons 5 and 6.  O.K., so we'll give the editor a break and suppose
Trampas traded horses from the remuda during the drive.  But as he was going
to St. John to visit Bill Doolie Trampas was riding a sorrel horse (from film
possibly shot during season two) yet arrived in that town on the buckskin. (bj)
