Jim Davis as Matt Clark
co-starring
Mary Castle as Frankie Adams (1954, season 1) (eps 1-26)
Kristine Miller as Margaret "Jonesy" Jones (1955, season 2)(eps 27-39)

Premise:
Stories of Matt Clark, Railroad Detective, who traveled West each week
to aid in the capture of one of history's notable badmen (or women).
*
At times, Clark's appearance at the scene seemed somewhat contrived, as
in just "happening" to be in town when Ford shoots Jesse James. The
stories do have some limited educational value, as each one sticks to
the basic facts, although production values for the series were decidedly
low budget. The amazing thing was, that Clark would chase
Quantrill in 1863, the next Tom Horn in 1903...30 years apart...yet he never aged!

########## Stories of the Century ###########
########### historical background ###########
##############################################

Through Republic Pictures, with its prolific outpouring of "B" grade
feature films and matinee serials of the post-Second World War period,
came this collection of 39 teleplays whose subjects included both
strious and notorious figures in America’s western landscape.

Among the more obscure characters of historical fact or of lore are
Ella Watson, known as "Cattle Kate" (possibly ep#6 ) , an 1889 victim
(by hanging without benefit of trial) of Wyoming vigilantes, whose homicide
helped to launch the Johnson County War between long-established landowners
and immigrant homesteaders three years later.

That same war took the life of Nathan "Nate" D. Champion (ep#33), a
Texas-born cattle driver who was martyred in defense of his cabin on the
Nolan K. C. Ranch, north of the Powder River, outside of Casper, Wyoming.

An egregious nomad of the Oklahoma Territory was William Doolin (ep#21),
whose gang pillaged a series of banks and trains before being relentlessly
pursued by United States Deputy Marshal William Tilghman. Tilghman
captured and arrested Doolin in a hotel lobby; Doolin escaped, only to be
killed in gunplay with a different officer of the law.

Another pillager was Henry Plummer (ep#17), who had assumed the position of
Sheriff of Beaverhead County, Montana Territory, from which vantage point
he could be forewarned of gold transports. His notoriety commenced even
earlier, with a series of stagecoach holdups through much of the 1850’s.
Plummer’s demise was at the hands of a team of vigilantes, who hanged him
in his own Beaverhead County, on a blustering January 10, 1864.

Along with the
more celebrated western desperadoes, such as William H. Bonney, actually
Henry McCarty, known as "Billly the Kid" (1859-81), John Wesley Hardin
(1853-95), Sam Bass (1851-78), and the James Brothers, Frank (1843-1915),
and Jesse (1847-82), there are also stock portrayals of Native American
figures like Geronimo (1829-1909), Chief of the Southern Chiricahua Apache,
Crazy Horse (1844?-77), Chief of the Minneconjou Band of the Oglala Sioux,
and "The Apache Kid", believed to have been born Has-kay-bay-nay-ntayl
(c. 1869- c.1894), the scourge of the Arizona border following his flight
from officials escorting him a penitentiary in Yuma . "The Apache Kid"
became legendary after his apparent disappearance circa 1894. The
anthology also contains uplifting portraits of western paladins who have
been properly drawn as earthy and sometimes lax, of which the Texas
marshals T.I., called "Long Hair Jim", Courtright of Fort Worth, and Ben
Tompson of Austin are supreme examples.
