"Sir: I believe that Jay C. Flippen
played the role of the Chief of the Boat on the episode "The Cavalla Story",
in the series "The Silent Service".
R.Adm. Tommy Dyckers called my dad to get a release for his name to be
used on this episode. My father, Chief Petty Officer Hoyt S. Greeson, Sr.,
TMC, was Chief of the Boat on Cavalla when she sank the Japanese aircraft
carrier "Shikoku". The skipper, Cdr. Herman Kossler, was awarded the
Navy Cross for this exploit.

RE: Silent Service ep 2.17 The Cavalla Story (June 2006)
From: "Hoyt Greeson" <hgreeson@laurentian.ca>
Greetings.
Thanks for your note today. Since none of the characters listed by TVGuide are
named Greeson or Chief of the Boat (now called "COB"), perhaps the TVGuide
just didn't have space to list all the characters depicted in this episode,
especially the enlisted men.
I'm visiting my brother here in Eugene, OR, who recalls that our father
received a phone call from R.Adm. Tommy Dyckers, asking permission to use his
name on this episode.
I made contact a few years ago with one of the officers of the Cavalla crew.
I'm certain this officer is "Zeke" Zellner, Capt., USN, Retired,
listed below, who helped save the Cavalla from being turned into scrap iron.
Thanks to his efforts, the ship is now in the aquatic park at either Corpus
Christi or Galveston. Zeke lives in Florida.
Cavalla eventually sank the Japanese aircraft carrier Shokoku, for which Cdr.
Hermann Kossler received the Navy Cross, and several members of the crew, the Bronze
Star. Capt. Zellner told me why our father received his Bronze Star.
I'm happy you contacted me. Our dad has been gone since 1976, and I just turned 73
on June 22, 2006. I'm happy to be able to reply.
Best wishes,
Hoyt Greeson, retired
