Synopsis
Comedy about Sidney Lucas, a small, manic-depressive pessimist beset by his
doubts and inadequacies. He is attempting to script 'the greatest sex novel
of all time' but grows more and more depressed as he struggles against his
surroundings, the chaotic disorder of the flat where he lives with his wife
and children. His wife, Tessa, tries to inspire Sidney by locking him in the
kitchen when he can't, or even won't work. Writer Ernest Gebler says the plot
involves 'a loving idiot who's trying to write the greatest sex novel in the
history of colossal publishing, who finds he can't sink low enough to achieve
such fame because he has a happy love life with his wife'.
Is Sidney eventually successful? Well he does find fame, but not quite in the way he expected...
